Use a real job description and your own permitted preparation notes. ChatGPT's official documentation describes back-and-forth conversation and revising supplied material. A text chat is enough for this exercise. You can rehearse without recording a real interview or sharing an employer's confidential assessment.
Give the mock interviewer a narrow brief
Supply the role, work tasks, interview format if known, and the skills you want to rehearse. Ask for three main questions with one follow-up each, rather than twenty questions followed by model answers. A short round makes it easier to review what you actually said.
Separate questions about past experience from hypothetical situations. If you have not done a task, practice explaining how you would approach it without turning that plan into a claim on your resume. Use the STAR worksheet when you need to organize a genuine past example; the mock round here practices responding as new information arrives.
Tell ChatGPT to avoid inventing an employer's interview rubric, selection criteria, or likely hiring outcome. You can supply practice criteria yourself: did the answer address the question, explain the first action, name the information needed, and acknowledge uncertainty?
Try a scenario with a changing constraint
This original fictional rehearsal concerns a service-desk coordinator role. The employer and questions are invented teaching material. The exchange illustrates one possible follow-up.
Interviewer: Two visitors arrive for the same appointment slot. The shared calendar shows one booking, while a confirmation email shows another. What would you do first?
Practice answer: I would check both confirmations and ask a colleague which booking was entered last, then offer one visitor a later appointment.
A useful follow-up challenges an assumption in that answer:
Interviewer: There is no later appointment today, and you cannot change bookings yourself. What would you do now?
The first answer assumed a later slot and authority to offer it. A revised response can explain checking the booking references, acknowledging the conflict to both visitors, and asking the authorized coordinator for a resolution. It should not promise an appointment it cannot provide.
Another possible branch is about communication: “What would you say to the visitors while checking?” That tests a different part of the response from “Which source would you check?” Ask ChatGPT to choose a follow-up from what your answer leaves unresolved.
Keep interviewer and coach turns separate
If ChatGPT interrupts after every sentence with a polished answer, you spend the session reading its phrasing. In interview mode, ask it to pose the question and wait. In coach mode, request the exact part of your response behind each comment.
For the fictional answer, useful feedback would be: “You proposed a later appointment before establishing that one existed.” “Be more confident” is harder to act on and does not explain the assumption.
Keep the first response beside the revised one. The change should address a particular weakness: perhaps you added an authority check, removed an unsupported promise, or answered the follow-up directly. Do not replace your own voice with a paragraph you cannot explain.

Role and real job-description excerpt: [PASTE]
Interview format and confirmed requirements: [ENTER OR UNKNOWN]
My actual experience and limits: [PASTE BRIEF NOTES]
Practice focus: [ENTER]
Ask 3 main questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer. After each,
ask one followup based on a specific assumption, omission, or choice
in my response; wait again. Do not show suggested answers during
the round. Keep hypothetical situations distinct from past experience.
Do not invent employer criteria or facts about my background.
After the round, quote a short exact part of each response and explain
one improvement using these practice criteria: answers the question,
clear first action, relevant information/authority checks, uncertainty
handled honestly. Label these my practice criteria, not employer rules.
Suggest one question to retry. No hiring prediction or readiness score.
Begin with the first question only.
Retry one answer under the same conditions
Choose the most useful correction and repeat that question without looking at the revised paragraph. Then change one scenario condition, such as the missing contact or unavailable system. Can you still explain a sensible next action?
Keep a few cues for the next practice round, including the limits of your actual experience. For interview-day logistics, the job interview checklist covers the separate work of confirming time, joining instructions, and submitted materials. Finish rehearsal with an answer you can adapt, rather than a script you need the interviewer to follow.
