ChatGPT for music theory: check the spelling as well as the sound

When asking ChatGPT to build a triad, specify the root, chord quality and notation system. Ask for the letter names first, then accidentals and intervals. A major triad needs a major third and a perfect fifth above its root. Matching piano keys alone does not explain why the notes have those written names.

For C-sharp major, write C#, E#, G#. E# shares a piano key with F in twelve-tone equal temperament, but the letter E identifies the chord's third. Replacing it with F obscures the interval spelling you are trying to learn.

Build the letter skeleton before counting semitones

This original worked exercise uses Western letter-name notation and twelve-tone equal temperament for semitone comparisons. The examples are written theory exercises, not recordings or observed ChatGPT outputs.

Starting on C, count letters inclusively: C-D-E gives a third; C-D-E-F-G gives a fifth. A triad on a C-letter root therefore uses C, E and G letters before you choose accidentals.

For C# major, the root is C#. E# lies four semitones above that root and G# lies seven semitones above it. Those are the major-third and perfect-fifth distances needed for the major triad.

Chord Root Third Fifth Semitones above root
C# major C# E# G# 0, 4, 7
C# minor C# E G# 0, 3, 7
Db major Db F Ab 0, 4, 7

The minor triad lowers the third by one semitone while keeping the perfect fifth. It does not lower every note. Db major uses different written letters from C# major even though corresponding notes can share equal-tempered piano keys.

The authors' Open Music Theory chapter on triads, checked October 24, 2026, defines major and minor triads through the third and fifth above the root. Use those interval relationships to review the generated spelling.

Check why a plausible-looking note is wrong for the task

C#, F, G# reaches the same equal-tempered keys as C#, E#, G#, but C-to-F is a fourth by letter count. The written C#-to-F interval is a diminished fourth, not the major third required by the requested triad spelling.

That does not make F an impossible sound. It makes it the wrong spelling for this particular theoretical construction. Keep the distinction between written interval identity and equal-tempered pitch equivalence explicit.

If your course uses solfege, a different naming convention or another tuning context, state that before asking for a correction. Do not silently treat this piano-key comparison as a claim about every tuning system.

Separate inversion from chord quality

Move the E# below C# and G#, keeping the same three chord tones. With E# in the bass, the C# major triad is in first inversion. It remains a major triad because its chord-tone relationships to the root have not changed.

The lowest written note is therefore not always the root. Ask ChatGPT to identify the pitch classes, infer the root and quality, and then name the bass position. Otherwise an explanation can rename a chord whenever the voicing changes.

As a short check, write E#, G#, C# in ascending order with E# as the bass. The supported analysis is C# major, first inversion. To check exact octaves or a staff drawing, supply those details separately; letter names alone do not specify every register.

Copy a spelling-first prompt

OpenAI's prompting guidance, checked October 24, 2026, supports specifying your context and desired response. For this exercise, include the notation and the attempted spelling:

Help me check these triads using Western letter-name notation.
Use twelve-tone equal temperament only for semitone comparisons.
My attempted C# major spelling is C#-F-G#.

First find the root/third/fifth letter skeleton. Then add accidentals
for a major third and perfect fifth above the root. Explain the
letter interval and semitone distance separately. Compare C# major,
C# minor and Db major. Explain the role of E# without treating shared
piano keys as identical written interval names.

Then analyze E#-G#-C# with E# as the bass: name the root, quality
and inversion separately. Do not invent octaves or claim audio playback.
Give me one different root to spell, and wait for my attempt before
showing its complete answer.

The relative-pitch worksheet asks what can be read from staff height and a missing clef. Here the notes are already named, and the work is to justify their harmonic spelling. Put your corrected triad beside its letter skeleton and interval distances, then try a different root before looking at another generated answer.
