Use ChatGPT for statistics without losing the study design

Ask ChatGPT a statistical question with the unit of observation, variables, sampling method, and comparison you intend to make. Request an explanation of the method and its assumptions before accepting a calculation. A correct average cannot establish that a change caused an improvement or that a small convenience sample represents everyone.

ChatGPT can help explain statistical concepts, outline analyses, review code, and interpret supplied results. Start by distinguishing description of the data you have from inference about a wider population. Then decide what evidence would support that inference.

State what one observation represents

A row might represent a person, one visit, or a person's measurement at one time. Those are different analysis units. If the same people appear before and after a change, say so explicitly; they are not two unrelated groups.

Give the question in ordinary language before naming a test. “Did the same participants finish the second task faster?” is more informative than “Run a t-test.” A test name does not tell the analyst whether observations are paired, why some are missing, or how people entered the study.

OpenAI's prompting guidance, checked October 24, 2026, recommends supplying relevant context and boundaries. For statistical work, that includes the study design and what conclusions the data may support.

Check paired changes with a small example

This original fictional practice dataset records minutes spent on a classroom task before and after an explanation. It is not a real study or a ChatGPT execution result.

Participant Before, minutes After, minutes After minus before
A 10 8 -2
B 14 11 -3
C 16 Missing Unavailable
D 20 19 -1

The three complete pairs have differences of -2, -3, and -1 minutes. Their mean change is -6 / 3 = -2 minutes. This describes the three participants with both measurements.

Subtracting the mean of all available before values from the mean of all available after values gives a different calculation: 38 / 3 - 60 / 4 = approximately -2.33 minutes. It uses different sets of participants at the two times. It is not the mean of the three observed within-person changes.

Do not replace C's missing after measurement with zero. Nor should you quietly remove C and label the result an average for every participant. State the complete-pair count and investigate why follow-up is missing before treating that subset as representative.

Ask for the method before a significance label

Question: [WHAT I WANT TO LEARN]

Variables, definitions and units: [PASTE]
How participants/items were selected: [PASTE]
Study design, repeated measurements and missing data: [PASTE]

First separate descriptive questions from population inference and
causal questions. Identify whether observations are paired or
independent. Explain the proposed method and assumptions, and ask
for missing design information before choosing an inferential test.

Show calculations or runnable analysis code for review. State which
records contribute to each result. Do not invent measurements,
p-values, confidence intervals, random assignment or sample details.
Keep descriptive findings separate from unsupported conclusions.

If you already have statistical software output, include the model specification and variable coding too. A coefficient's sign is hard to interpret without knowing which category is the reference or how the response was measured.

Keep description, inference and causation separate

For the practice data, “the three complete pairs averaged two minutes less on the second task” follows from the records. “The explanation saves everyone two minutes” adds both a population claim and a causal claim.

Practice, task differences, and other changes could affect a before-and-after comparison without a suitable comparison design. OpenStax's experimental-design chapter explains experimental units, treatment assignment, and the problem of other variables differing between groups. Choosing an inferential test cannot supply a missing study design.

For files needing duplicate and missing-value checks before analysis, use the ChatGPT data-analysis workflow. Here, finish by keeping the study description, included records, calculation, and appropriately bounded interpretation together. Ask a qualified statistical reviewer about consequential inference before presenting a model-generated conclusion as established evidence.
