The four-card activity keeps each sentence attached to one of two fictional situations. Learners classify it as literal or intentionally exaggerated, then write a plain-language explanation. Check feedback explains the fixed classification, and a separate sample paraphrase helps discussion without grading the learner’s wording.

Read the printer situation first
Situation A says Nia waited three minutes for a classroom printer. H1 reads, “I waited three minutes.” It is literal in this scenario because the wording matches the supplied duration. H2 reads, “I waited a thousand years for this page.” The intentional exaggeration emphasizes impatience rather than measuring the wait.
Merriam-Webster defines hyperbole through extravagant exaggeration used for emphasis. Use that concept with these original teaching sentences. A large number alone is not enough to classify a statement; context matters. The game therefore keeps the three-minute fact visible whenever H1 or H2 is selected, instead of letting a dramatic phrase become an isolated guessing prompt.
Paraphrase the emphasis without replacing the fact
A teacher sample for H2 is, “The short wait felt very long, and I was impatient.” It describes the intended emphasis while leaving three minutes as the supplied duration. A learner may offer different sensible wording, such as “I felt impatient waiting for the page.” The teacher reviews the meaning in context.
Do not accept “the wait really lasted a thousand years” as a factual restatement. Also avoid requiring an exact match to the sample sentence. Use the fixed classification feedback to start that discussion, then compare the learner’s wording with the supplied situation.
Keep the packet count and its unknown weight distinct
Situation B supplies a small packet containing two pages, with no weight measurement. H3 reads, “This packet has two pages.” It is literal because it matches the count. H4 reads, “This packet weighs as much as a mountain.” It exaggerates a sense of burden in this teaching context.
A sample paraphrase is, “This packet feels like a big burden.” The packet's actual weight remains unknown. Do not convert the comparison into pounds or claim that two pages are physically heavy. The sentence gives figurative emphasis, not a measurement or a verified amount of work.
Ask for two different kinds of response
For each card, choose literal or intentional exaggeration. Then identify the supporting words and write the emphasis in plain language. For H1 and H3, explain the match to the supplied fact rather than inventing a figurative meaning. For H2 and H4, explain the exaggeration without repeating its impossible measurement as fact.
The preview starts with no choice and a blank explanation. Check asks for a choice first, then gives scenario-specific feedback. A Hint points to the relevant fact. An explicit sample reveal opens the teacher paraphrase. Switching cards updates the situation and clears visible feedback; each card retains its own temporary attempt.
Use the key as a discussion aid
There are four unique cards. Rechecking H2 is another attempt at H2, not a fifth question or a new achievement. Editing a classification or explanation clears its old feedback so a previous check cannot appear to cover changed work. Reset clears all attempts, notes and reveals while preserving the original situations.
Keep the native learner sheet and teacher key in the required classroom format. This task does not classify every figurative device in arbitrary prose or make metaphor and idiom interchangeable with hyperbole. Its bounded job is to connect intentional exaggeration with the supplied situation, preserving what is known and what remains unknown.

Create a complete original HTML example in US English for this task: Hyperbole games for the classroom. Return one self-contained HTML file. Include all styles, data and JavaScript in the file. Use no remote dependencies. Return the working page, not an outline.
Situation A fictional Nia waits 3 minutes for printer. H1 I waited three minutes: Literal. H2 I waited a thousand years for this page: Exaggerated impatience. Sample The short wait felt very long, and I was impatient. Situation B two-page packet, weight unknown. H3 This packet has two pages: Literal. H4 This packet weighs as much as a mountain: Exaggerated burden; sample This packet feels like a big burden.
Use four fixed card buttons, each loading its exact situation, statement and supplied fact. Provide Literal/Intentional exaggeration choice buttons, blank supporting-words/plain-language explanation, Hint, Check and explicit teacher-sample reveal. Check classification only; accept that multiple paraphrases may be sensible and require teacher review. Blank choice is unanswered. Any answer edit clears stale feedback, card changes update all context, repeats are not extra cards and reset clears attempts/reveal. Do not invent measured weight, workload, actual 1000 year duration, student performance, score service or persistence. Use original typographic fact/statement contrast rather than dictionary examples.
Use a page design suited to this particular task, readable text at least 16 px, generous spacing, visible keyboard focus and explicit labels. At 360 px, stack the content without page-level horizontal scrolling. Use type="button" click handlers for actions. Keep source facts and sample results distinct from actual observations. Leave unknown details visible rather than inventing them. Controls update only this temporary page; distinguish local changes from actual records. Provide concise task-specific feedback and a reset that clears entered answers and stale results.
Compare two sensible paraphrases
Invite two learners to paraphrase H2 differently, then discuss whether both express impatience while preserving the three-minute fact. When preparing the contrast with another teacher, render the HTML sentence cards in NOS to keep the literal details beside the explanations. Repeat with H4, checking that neither explanation invents a weight. Add the accepted alternatives to the teacher’s discussion notes so the sample wording does not become the only allowable answer.
