This shape map answers "How do these shapes relate?" It uses three canonical concepts: Square, Quadrilateral, and Four sides. Three directed links read "A square is a quadrilateral," "A quadrilateral has Four sides," and "A square has Four sides." The HTML editor keeps the map and proposition list together when you rename the shared third node or remove its direct link from Square.

Start with a relation table
Give each concept one ID: N01 Square, N02 Quadrilateral, and N03 Four sides. Define E01 from N01 to N02 with "is a," E02 from N02 to N03 with "has," and E03 from N01 to N03 with "has."
IHMC's explanation of propositions describes concepts joined by linking words to form meaningful statements. The directed shape relationships here use that structure with original content. Read each relationship aloud from source to target before drawing it.
"Is a" expresses a classification in this example; "has" names an attribute. A bare arrow cannot distinguish those statements. Reversing E01 would also change the claim, even if the boxes stayed in the same positions.
Keep shared concepts shared
N03 participates in two relationships. Reuse that single concept instead of making two Four sides boxes to force a tree. N01 likewise remains one Square node even though two arrows leave it.
The direct E03 connection supplies a separate proposition from the route through Quadrilateral. Removing it should remove only "A square has Four sides" from the list. Square and Four sides still belong in the map because the other relationships reference them.
The example places the concepts in a vertical reading path with a separately labeled direct connection. The same three propositions remain available as text, so readers do not have to interpret arrow color or spatial position alone.
Edit the shared label and read both consequences
Rename N03 to "Four edges" and apply the change. Both E02 and E03 now use that label in the map and proposition list, preserving its capitalization exactly. There is still one N03, and neither relationship should retain the old label.
This edit demonstrates synchronization, not an automatic judgment about preferred mathematical vocabulary. Read the new statements and decide whether they express the focus question clearly. Structural consistency does not establish that every possible user-written claim is true.
The E03 button removes or restores that direct relationship. After removal, two propositions remain. Restoring it returns the third using N03's current label. The operation should never silently recreate a deleted node or reset an unrelated label.
Leave a blank relationship unresolved
The E01 linking-word field lets you inspect what happens when a connection lacks meaning. Clear it and apply the edit: the connection remains labeled TO CONFIRM, and its proposition is flagged for author review. A missing link phrase is not permission to guess.
A blank concept label is a different problem: identify the missing node name and withhold a misleading proposition display. Reset returns the three supplied concepts and original links. All edits stay in the open page; reload restores the example.

Create one complete offline US-English HTML concept-map editor for an original shape example. Use a clear diagram-first teaching design with three canonical node boxes, directed labeled connections, and a synchronized plain proposition list. Use at least 16px text, generous controls, visible focus, and a 360px responsive layout. No remote assets, storage, or semantic scoring.
Focus question: How do these shapes relate? Nodes are N01 Square, N02 Quadrilateral, N03 Four sides. Relationships E01 N01 is a N02, E02 N02 has N03, E03 N01 has N03. Initial readable propositions are A square is a quadrilateral; A quadrilateral has Four sides; A square has Four sides. Preserve direction and reuse node identities rather than duplicating shared nodes.
Provide a labeled text input to rename N03 and another to change E01 linking words, plus a type=button Apply changes control. Updating N03 must refresh both E02 and E03 in diagram and text. A blank concept label gives an actionable error and clears stale claims. Blank linking words remain TO CONFIRM rather than being guessed. Structural checks do not establish arbitrary proposition truth.
Add a button to remove/restore only E03. Removing it deletes its proposition but retains N01/N03 because they remain connected elsewhere. Restore it with current labels, and show the exact active relationship count. Provide Reset to original nodes, links, and labels.
Use text arrows or original local graphics with labeled source-to-target direction, plus complete text equivalents. All edits are temporary and native concept/relation records remain authoritative. No downloads, shared editing, persistence, grading, or learner performance claims. Return complete self-contained HTML using explicit selectors and accessible click handlers.
Before sharing a map, read every directed connection as a complete claim and check its source and target against the relation table. Preview the HTML map in NOS when reviewing those statements with a colleague or learner. Keep the maintained concept and relation tables as the source, and resolve any TO CONFIRM links before relying on the map to explain a topic.
