Resume Examples: A Complete Sample and How to Make It Yours

Resume examples are most useful when they show how someone with experience like yours turns their work into a clear application. A finished sample gives you more to work with than an empty page of headings. You may already have the raw material: jobs, classes, a project or two. The snag is that those facts tend to come out as duties, like “Responsible for collecting samples,” which says what the job was but not what you did in it. Below is one complete sample resume for a fictional applicant, the rewrites that turn duty lines into results, and an optional AI prompt that lays out your version using only facts you supply.

The example: a fictional entry-level field data resume

The sample belongs to Priya Raman, a fictional 2026 environmental science graduate applying for a field data technician job at a county water utility. Every name, employer, date and number in it is invented for illustration.

On a first read, skip the colors and fonts. Notice three choices instead: each experience line opens with an action verb, most lines carry a count or an outcome, and within each heading the most recent entry comes first. Priya put Experience above Education because the posting stresses fieldwork. University career guidance suggests listing headings in order of importance, so your order can differ.

Priya Raman — fictional sample

Turning a duty into a line someone can scan

Priya’s first draft of one internship line read: “Responsible for collecting water samples at monitoring sites.” The version on the page reads: “Collected and logged 340 water samples across 12 creek sites; flagged 9 out-of-range readings.”

The rewrite follows university career guidance: be specific rather than general, active rather than passive, and fact-based, quantifying and qualifying what you did. That guidance names passive language and not demonstrating results among the top resume mistakes, and it advises against personal pronouns such as “I” or “we.”

If you have no number, qualify instead: how often, for whom, or what changed because you did it. A weekly check, a crew of three, or a backlog cleared before a deadline gives a reader something concrete to picture.

Then tailor. Career centers advise reading job descriptions closely and shaping your resume to the specific company and position. Priya’s posting mentioned chain-of-custody forms, so that line moved to the top of her internship entry.

Choosing how to build yours

If the application asks for a Word file, starting in an editable document template is the most direct route. Some university career centers publish editable Word and Google Docs templates next to their samples. If you can reach a campus career office, an advisor review is another option; some centers run drop-in hours where an advisor will look over a resume.

AI is a third option, mostly for layout and revision. University guidance describes generative AI as useful for brainstorming bullet revisions and working in keywords from a job description, but says it should not be the primary author, partly because its output will likely be generic. So the prompt below asks an AI to arrange and tighten facts you provide, and to mark gaps instead of filling them.

It asks for an HTML page, meaning a single web page file you open in a browser. That page is a good draft to read on a phone and pass around for feedback, but it does not replace the PDF or Word file an application asks for.

Checks before anyone else reads it

The same guidance lists spelling and grammar errors and missing email or phone information among the top mistakes. It also advises leaving off a photo, your age or gender, and a list of references, and keeping spacing, bold, italics and capitalization consistent.

When you convert your final version to PDF, open the file and confirm the formatting held. Resume guidelines can vary from country to country, so check local expectations if you apply abroad.

Priya used the prompt to lay out her page, then wanted a former field supervisor to read it before she uploaded anything, so she put the page in NOS and sent its share link. Recipients can open a shared NOS page without an account. The supervisor only had to tap the link.

The reply had one note: “flagged 9 out-of-range readings” didn’t say what happened to them. Rendered text in NOS can be edited directly. Priya clicked into that line and typed “flagged 9 out-of-range readings; all 9 resampled within 24 hours” without asking an AI to rebuild the page.

A published NOS share link stays the same after edits. The supervisor reopened the link already in their messages and saw the corrected line.

When the utility’s portal asked for a PDF, Priya copied the final wording into her document file and uploaded that. The shared page stayed the review copy. Since a resume page carries your phone number and email, send the link only to the people reviewing it.

A prompt to adapt

Build my resume as a single, self-contained HTML page I can read in a browser.

Target job: [JOB TITLE — e.g., Field Data Technician]
Job posting text: [PASTE THE FULL POSTING]
Contact line: [FULL NAME] · [CITY, STATE] · [EMAIL] · [PHONE]
Experience, most recent first: [ROLE, ORGANIZATION, START–END DATES, and what I actually did, with any counts or outcomes I can confirm — e.g., “Lab Assistant, Biology Dept., Sep 2024–May 2026: calibrated meters before weekly labs; rebuilt the freezer inventory sheet”]
Education: [DEGREE, SCHOOL, CITY, GRADUATION MONTH/YEAR, optional relevant coursework]
Projects or activities (optional): [NAME, DATES, what I did, any result]
Skills and certifications: [LIST, with expiration dates if any]

Requirements:
- Use only the facts above. Do not invent employers, dates, numbers, tools or results. Where a line needs a detail I didn’t give, write [ADD DETAIL] and tell me what is missing.
- Rewrite duty lines as bullets that start with an action verb, are specific, and show a result or scope. No “I” or “we.”
- Order section headings by what matters most for this posting. Within each heading, list entries in reverse chronological order. Within each entry, put the lines that match the posting first.
- Leave out any photo, age, gender and references.
- Semantic HTML: one h1 for my name, h2 for each section heading, real ul/li lists for bullets. All content must be real text, not images.
- Mobile: single column below 600px wide, body text at least 16px, no horizontal scrolling, comfortable line spacing.
- Accessibility: text contrast of at least 4.5:1 against its background, a lang="en" attribute, and no meaning conveyed by color alone.
- Inline CSS only. No external fonts, scripts, images, icons, forms or links to outside services.
- Keep the styling plain and consistent: one font family, consistent spacing, bold, italics and capitalization.
- After the HTML, list every change you made to my wording, line by line, so I can check each one is still true.
