The 45-minute lesson compares an original direction with “From the entrance, walk to shelf B for storybooks.” A structured activity asks learners to identify its starting point, action and destination. A separate readiness review keeps the real partner request and permission unresolved rather than treating a classroom answer as approval to post a sign.

Start with the partner question
The fictional neighborhood reading room needs clearer shelf directions. For actual service work, confirm the partner's stated need, contact, review role, access conditions, permissions and what may be public. Those actual fields are blank in this model. Use the response record to preserve the partner’s requested changes, including a rejection.
Duke's service-learning course-label guidance links service with academic content and critical reflection, including ethical and civic dimensions. This short lesson uses those relationships, not Duke's course-label requirements as a universal school rule. It is classroom preparation, not a completed community visit or evidence of benefit to real visitors.
Name the writing improvement
The academic objective is to revise one direction with a named starting point, action and destination. T1 says, “Go there for stories.” It has vague movement language and no named start or destination. Ask learners what a new reader would need to know before following it.
T2 says, “From the entrance, walk to shelf B for storybooks.” Starting point: entrance. Action: walk. Destination: shelf B. The example provides a tiny invented layout showing those labels. It is not a map of an actual building. T2 supplies the three writing elements but still needs partner review for real wording, location and access suitability.
Use 45 minutes to collect different evidence
Budget 5 minutes for the fictional need and confirmation gaps, 10 to analyze T1, 15 to revise, 10 for a peer trial in the invented layout and 5 for individual reflection. The blocks total 45 minutes. Actual timings and responses stay separate from that proposed schedule.
The interactive task offers blank fields for T2's three elements and checks them against the original text. It explains the mapping without grading an arbitrary rewritten paragraph. A separate draft area lets learners try their own direction for teacher discussion. Keep T1 and T2 available so any observation can name which version was used.
Keep peer response and partner response apart
For the peer trial, record version tested, interpreted start, action, destination and unresolved ambiguity. A classmate's successful interpretation in an invented layout is classroom evidence, not a visitor test. Do not copy it into the partner-response field.
Clearer wording does not authorize real-world use. The preparation controls let a teacher explore which confirmations are still missing, but their labels explicitly describe a scenario. Toggling them is not receipt of a real request or permission. Attach the exact direction version to the question so a later response identifies which wording was reviewed.
Make reflection answer a real question
Ask the learner which wording change supplied information absent in T1, what the peer trial showed and what it left unknown. Then ask who should judge whether the wording fits the reading room's need and what must be confirmed before outside use. Keep each actual answer blank until supplied.
The next record needs the partner's response, reviewer, date, requested changes and approval reference if any. Preserve rejected or revised wording with its feedback instead of making a later draft appear to have been tested earlier. Maintain these actual records in the school's and partner's required formats. The local preview sends nothing and does not save the temporary draft or reflection.

Fictional neighborhood reading-room need, actual partner contact/request/permission blank. T1 Go there for stories. T2 From the entrance, walk to shelf B for storybooks. Invented entrance/shelf B layout. Criterion starting point entrance/action walk/destination shelf B. Session 5 need+ 10 analysis+ 15 revision+ 10 peer trial+ 5 reflection= 45 minutes.
Build a lesson sheet with both text versions, a small original labeled fictional map and a visible 45 minute sequence. Add a structured identify-start/action/destination activity with explicit Check elements and answer-specific feedback. Keep learner revision, peer observation and reflection blank and separate. Add blank partner/request reference, contact, reviewer/date, access conditions, public-use permission/reference and actual partner-response fields. Edits prompt source verification; scenario toggles never validate these notes. Include two clearly labeled scenario confirmation buttons for partner request and permission; a Review next action button reports missing confirmations or partner review still required, never approval or service completion. Reset clears attempts/notes/scenario flags. Preserve T1/T2 references, no actual visit, posting, real partner consent, outcome statistics, notifications or saved student work.
Use a page design suited to this particular task, readable text at least 16 px, generous spacing, visible keyboard focus and explicit labels. At 360 px, stack the content without page-level horizontal scrolling. Use type="button" click handlers for actions. Keep source facts and sample results distinct from actual observations. Leave unknown details visible rather than inventing them. Controls update only this temporary page; distinguish local changes from actual records. Provide concise task-specific feedback and a reset that clears entered answers and stale results.
Bring one question to the partner
End the classroom session by choosing the exact wording to ask the partner about: is shelf B the right destination, and would the direction suit the intended readers? Use an HTML view rendered in NOS to compare the fictional original and revised directions while preparing that question. Enter the partner’s actual response and review reference in the confirmation record. Revise from that response before considering any outside use.
