Art Games for the Classroom: Revise the Direction That Left Too Much Open

“Put a circle beside the rectangle” could produce several drawings. A mismatch does not immediately show poor listening; the direction left above/below and left/right unresolved.

This art game uses that ambiguity as the reason to revise the description.

The original packet has two shape arrangements, two roles and a staged reveal. Learners compare spatial relationships rather than drawing quality. Actual sketches, spoken descriptions and observations remain blank until the activity takes place.

Agree on the page orientation

Use portrait pages. Declare page up and left/right from the viewer's perspective before describing either target. Avoid switching to a figure's imagined perspective halfway through a direction.

Getty's Describe, Listen, Draw resource connects detailed description, a partner's unseen sketch, reveal and reflection. We use that communication sequence for original shape targets rather than copying museum objects, worksheet images, duration or grade-alignment claims. Describe, Listen, Draw

Give the describer only the assigned target card; the sketcher starts with a genuinely blank drawing space. Classroom arrangement or separate native cards should prevent early viewing. An optional future hide/show control is a teaching convenience, not a secrecy or security guarantee.

Prepare two original targets

The teacher's target specifications are:

Target Rectangle Circle Short line
A Horizontal rectangle in the lower half of the portrait page Small circle above the rectangle's left edge, outside it Vertical line inside the rectangle near its right edge
B Horizontal rectangle in the upper half Small circle below the rectangle's right edge, outside it Horizontal line inside the rectangle near its left edge

Use these relationships to prepare original physical target cards. Exact pixel coordinates or to-scale reproduction are not the success criteria. The local target illustration is a teaching example; leave the learner's sketch blank.

A relational key asks whether the circle is outside and on the correct side, and whether the short line is inside with the specified orientation. It does not assign an art score for line smoothness, shape style or precise spacing.

Separate description, sketch and reveal

For the first round, one learner describes A while the other sketches without seeing A. Record the description version actually used. Keep the target hidden until that round's sketch is finished, then reveal and compare the specified relationships.

For a new round, swap roles and use B with a new blank sketch space. The second target changes the relationships; it should not merely reuse the first drawing. Record any early reveal. Once the sketcher has seen the target, that attempt is not a valid unseen-target trial.

The packet does not prescribe a competitive timer. Give the participants room to identify which words helped and which relation remained unclear, without inferring ability from one drawing difference.

Revise one ambiguous direction

Use the original model wording “circle beside rectangle.” It leaves the horizontal and vertical relationship unclear. A more specific trial for A is “Place the small circle above the rectangle's left edge, outside the rectangle.”

Compare a later sketch only with the description that actually produced it. If the learner changes the wording, give the revision a new version ID and retain the earlier sketch/observation record. Do not rewrite the earlier description and claim that the original listener heard the improved one.

Actual observations remain blank. A difference might come from ambiguous wording, a perspective mismatch or another unconfirmed cause. Ask what evidence supports the explanation instead of diagnosing poor listening or scoring artistic skill automatically.

Use a blank relation-review record

Round / target / roles: ______
Page orientation and viewer perspective: ______
Description version and actual words: ______
Sketch reference: ______
Circle relation observed: ______
Line inside/outside and orientation observed: ______
Target revealed before sketch finished? ______
Unresolved ambiguity: ______
Revised direction / new version: ______
Next trial observation: ______

The native target cards, paper sketch space and description log remain authoritative. Use the local phase view to review describe, sketch, reveal and review in order. Actual learner drawings and classroom outcomes are not supplied.

Copy this prompt for the art packet

Prepare an original US-English two-target describe/listen/draw packet, not actual target artwork or a game implementation. Include native target specifications, blank sketch space, description-version log and relation-review key. No Getty object/photos, learner profiles, art scores or actual outcomes.

Declare portrait page, page up and viewer left/right. A: horizontal rectangle lower half, small circle above its left edge outside it, short vertical line inside near right edge. B: horizontal rectangle upper half, small circle below its right edge outside it, short horizontal line inside near left edge. Compare fixed spatial relations, not pixels, scale or drawing quality.

Two roles describer/sketcher. Only describer sees assigned target before sketch; sketcher blank paper. Separate describe/sketch/reveal/review phases. Swap roles and use other target with new blank space. Early reveal recorded; then not a valid unseen-target trial. Native separate cards support classroom arrangement; optional later HTML hide is not security/secrecy guarantee.

Original ambiguous direction circle beside rectangle -> A trial Place the small circle above the rectangle's left edge, outside the rectangle. Actual words/drawings/observations blank. Preserve which version produced each sketch; new wording gets new record and cannot rewrite old observation. Differences not automatic poor-listening/art-skill diagnosis. Blank fields round/target/roles, orientation, description version/words, sketch reference, observed circle/line relations, early reveal, ambiguity, revision and next observation.

Native packet authoritative. Specify later phase/reset controls with fresh blank round and stale feedback clear; actual original diagrams/keyboard/360px/width tests pending. No copied activity art, timer requirement, data collection, grades, saved edits or efficacy promise.

Review the words beside the relationships

The local HTML example places the target specification, description version and relation-review questions together. NOS supports saving and rendering prepared HTML. Keep separate native cards and actual sketch records as the authoritative packet.

Explore NOS to present the prepared description review. A learner should leave with a more precise spatial direction and a fair record of which words produced each sketch.
