If you only want to stop paying, change an email address, or remove one conversation, use the corresponding control instead. Those tasks do not require deleting the whole account.
Separate the account decision from the billing decision
Before deleting, check who bills each subscription. OpenAI says deletion cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT, but an Apple subscription is not canceled by account deletion. Save any conversations you are permitted to retain

Keep this note private if it identifies sensitive work. An unchecked download link is not a saved copy, and an account export does not cancel a subscription.
Use the deletion route for your account
On the web, the confirmation can ask for your account email or phone number and the word DELETE before the final deletion button. If you cannot sign in, OpenAI provides a Privacy Portal deletion request with ownership verification. Use the account identifier shown in the actual prompt. If you have both a personal account and a work account, check which one is signed in before typing the confirmation.
Keep the confirmation distinct from the retention period
