Export ChatGPT data: request the archive and check the conversations

For an eligible signed-in account, open Settings > Data controls > Export data and confirm the export request. Wait for the download message, save the archive, and open it to check the conversations you need. Copying one answer into a document does not preserve the rest of its conversation.

Plan ahead if you are about to change workspaces. A download link you have not opened is not yet a usable local record.

Check which account and workspace hold the conversation

OpenAI currently supports self-service exports for personal plans and eligible Edu workspaces. Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces use organization-managed access instead; contact the workspace owner. Edu access depends on role and workspace settings. Current export availability

Before requesting the archive, find one conversation you need and note its title and a distinctive phrase. That gives you something concrete to find in the delivered copy. Check that you are signed into the account and workspace containing it.

For example, you might want a permitted conversation about choosing a workshop venue. Write down the actual title and a phrase such as “compare the two room layouts.” Use your real reference; do not assume an archive contains the chat because the request succeeded.

Request the export through settings or the Privacy Portal

On the web, use your profile menu to reach Settings, then Data controls. Under Export data, select Export and Confirm export. You may need account-ownership verification. OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal route: Make a Privacy Request, I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data. Export request steps

Record when you made the request and which account it concerns. That is especially helpful if you keep separate personal and work accounts with similar conversation titles.

Delivery can take up to seven days. OpenAI sends email or SMS when the export is ready; the download link expires after 24 hours. Download while signed into the account that requested it. The ZIP contains chat history and other account data. Delivery and download conditions

Save the ZIP in a location permitted for its contents. Keep the original download intact and extract a working copy if you need to inspect files. Do not upload a complete account archive to a public file host just to make it easier to open.

Check one conversation before treating the archive as complete

Open the extracted files using software appropriate to the formats actually supplied. Find the title or distinctive phrase you noted before the request. Read the surrounding exchange and confirm that the relevant question and answer are present.

Check these independently: whether the archive opens, whether you can find the conversation, and whether the part you need is readable. A ZIP can open successfully while the record you wanted is absent. Record a missing item explicitly instead of repairing it from memory.

An export cannot recover chats you already deleted. If the task is to correct remembered preferences, ChatGPT Memory controls serve a different purpose. An archive is a copy to inspect, not a settings change or a restoration guarantee.

Resolve a delayed or expired download

While the request is processing, wait for it rather than creating duplicates. Check the account's inbox and spam folders, or SMS for a phone-only account. If delivery exceeds seven days, contact OpenAI Support. Request a new export if the link expires. Export troubleshooting

Keep the checked archive with a note identifying the account, request date, download date, and conversation you inspected. That makes the record useful when you return to it later.
