Separate the failed link from a broken page
Which part failed?
- No file reaches your Downloads folder: investigate the generated file link.
- A file downloads but opens as code or a blank page: inspect the saved file and its contents.
- The page opens, but an image or button fails: investigate its dependencies.
These need different repairs. A new download link will not supply a missing backend, and changing CSS will not renew an expired link.

Request a fresh file first
OpenAI’s download troubleshooting guidance says generated files expire quickly. Ask ChatGPT to recreate the file from the reviewed result, then try the new attachment promptly. The guidance does not give a universal lifetime, so do not work from an invented “exactly one hour” rule.
Use a request that preserves the report you already checked:
The HTML attachment cannot be downloaded. Recreate a fresh file named
review-report.html from the latest reviewed version in this conversation.
Keep its figures, text, chart labels, and unresolved items unchanged.
If that version is no longer available, say so; do not reconstruct
missing data from guesses. Provide the actual new file if file creation
is available, and also give the complete HTML as a text fallback.
If you are using a custom GPT, check that its Code Interpreter capability is enabled and that the GPT was updated after the setting changed. Also check the file size: OpenAI’s stated download limit in this guidance is 512 MB. Browser or network filtering can be another cause. If an organization manages your connection, ask its administrator to test the download rather than bypassing its controls. Check OpenAI’s status page for an active incident; an old incident is not evidence of today’s cause.
If the attachment still fails, save complete HTML
When ChatGPT can provide the full document as text, copy only the HTML into a plain-text editor. Leave out the Markdown fence before and after it. Save the file as review-report.html using UTF-8. Check the actual filename, including its extension; review-report.html.txt is a different filename.
Start with this small original fixture if you want to check your save procedure before handling the full report:
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1">
<title>HTML recovery check</title>
<body>
<h1>HTML recovery check</h1>
<p>Expected total: 63 attendances.</p>
<button type="button" onclick="this.textContent='Button works'">Test button</button>
</body>
</html>
After saving this small fixture, open it in your browser. It should show the heading and 63 attendances. Pressing the button changes its label. Those checks establish that this small file renders and its script runs; they do not establish that your original report was recovered correctly.
For a large document, check that the supplied text is complete before saving it. A closing tag alone is not proof: a shortened response can omit a whole section while still looking like valid HTML. Compare the report headings, figures, notes, and controls with your reviewed version.
When the recovered file opens but still fails
Check one real result and one interaction. For a chart, compare a labeled value with the source, change the filter, and check the new result. For a form, distinguish an on-screen confirmation from an actual submission to a server.
A missing image may point to a file that was never included. A button may depend on a service outside the saved page. The HTML export compatibility guide shows how to separate a self-contained browser copy from a platform-dependent application; that distinction also applies to an HTML report recovered from ChatGPT.
Send the recovered result, not the failed attachment address
Keep a local copy of the verified HTML. Send that file if an attachment is the required format, or use a checked browser link when the reader needs to open the page without downloading it. The HTML-to-link guide explains that delivery option in NOS.
Do not send the original generated-file address as if it were permanent hosting. Recover the report, check what it displays, and then choose the delivery format your reader actually needs.
