The official Linux app instructions, checked October 24, 2026, describe the desktop app as a preview. Start there rather than a similarly named community wrapper when your goal is the official app.
Identify the computer before downloading
In a terminal, inspect the distribution and architecture:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
These commands display information. They do not install the app. Read the distribution name and version from the first result, then match the architecture from the second:
| Example system | Architecture output | Package choice |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24.04 desktop | x86_64 | x64 .deb |
| Ubuntu 24.04 desktop | aarch64 | ARM64 .deb |
| Fedora 44 desktop | x86_64 | x64 .rpm |
| Fedora 44 desktop | aarch64 | ARM64 .rpm |
These are selection examples, not observations from your machine. OpenAI also recognizes arm64 as ARM64. Its preview support list includes Ubuntu 24.04/26.04 LTS, Debian 13, Fedora 43/44 and current, fully updated Arch desktop systems. Check the live list if your version differs.
For example, a colleague can correctly send you a Linux installer that still does not match your CPU. Compare both fields instead of interpreting a failed install as an account problem.
Follow the matching official installation route
Download the package from the official page. On Ubuntu or Debian, its documented route uses apt with the local .deb file; Fedora uses dnf with the local .rpm file. The ./ prefix identifies a package in the current directory.
For an x64 Ubuntu or Debian download with the documented filename:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.deb
For an ARM64 download, the documented .deb filename is chatgpt_arm64.deb. Use the filename you actually downloaded, and read the package manager's proposed changes before confirming. If the file is elsewhere, change to that directory or supply its exact path.
Arch has a separate installation script. OpenAI states that its installation performs a full system upgrade and asks for confirmation; use that distribution's instructions directly rather than adapting a Debian command. Do not run an install script merely because it appears in an unrelated search result.
After installation, open ChatGPT from the application menu and sign in. The download and installation do not themselves establish that you used the intended ChatGPT account.
Separate an installation problem from a display problem
If the package manager cannot find the local file, check the download location and filename. If it reports an incompatible architecture, compare the package with uname -m. Keep the exact error when asking for help; “Linux does not work” loses the step that actually failed.
If the app opens but floating windows, positioning or shortcuts behave differently in a Wayland session, OpenAI describes native Wayland support as experimental. Its Linux preview also does not yet include Computer Use. Those limits are separate from whether the package installed successfully. Compatibility and Wayland notes
For a focused troubleshooting request, use:
Help me diagnose this official ChatGPT Linux app problem.
Distribution/version from /etc/os-release: [PASTE]
Architecture from uname -m: [PASTE]
Downloaded package name and official source URL: [PASTE]
Command I ran and complete error: [PASTE]
Stage that failed: download / installation / launch / sign-in / display
Desktop session, if relevant: [X11 / Wayland / UNKNOWN]
Explain the mismatch before proposing a change. Use the current
official support list. Do not replace my distribution's package
manager, suggest an unofficial wrapper or assume an account issue
from a package error. Separate diagnostic commands from installs.
This request is for troubleshooting information. It does not claim that anyone has inspected your desktop or executed the supplied commands.
Finish with one verified installation
Confirm that the app launches, that you can sign in, and that the displayed account is the one you intend to use. Keep the official installation page with your notes for updates. For work involving connected services afterward, ChatGPT apps and permissions covers that separate setup; installing the desktop app does not connect those accounts for you.
