ChatGPT performance review: write a self-evaluation from work you can show

Your notes say “helped with onboarding.” The draft says you led a company-wide transformation and cut training time in half. Give ChatGPT the work records, your actual role, and the review form's questions before asking it to strengthen the wording. A useful self-evaluation explains what you contributed without upgrading participation into ownership or turning a guess into a result.

Start with one accomplishment. Check that paragraph against its evidence, then apply the same method to the rest of the form. Keep actual personnel material in the account and process your employer permits.

Give each accomplishment a source and a boundary

This original fictional example uses a customer-support onboarding project:

Note What the record supports
A1 You wrote three troubleshooting examples for the onboarding handbook.
A2 A teammate reviewed the examples and requested one clarification, which you revised.
A3 The team lead published the handbook. You did not own the full release.
A4 No before/after training-time measurement is supplied.

A supported draft is: “I wrote three troubleshooting examples for the onboarding handbook and revised the escalation step after peer review. The team lead included them in the published handbook. I would like to collect feedback from new agents to see which examples need further clarification.”

The first two sentences describe completed work. The third proposes a next step. Neither publication nor a positive-sounding verb proves that training became faster.

OpenAI's prompting documentation explains how to specify the intended result, useful context, and boundaries. Here, the essential boundary is that the draft must preserve who did what. A request to “make me sound more senior” gives less useful direction than “explain my contribution clearly without claiming ownership of the whole project.”

Draft against the question your form actually asks

A form asking for accomplishments needs the work and its supported outcome. A question about development needs an honest skill or practice to improve. Reusing the accomplishment paragraph for both can leave the second question unanswered.

For the sample, a development entry might be: “I want to test whether a new agent can follow each escalation example without additional explanation. My proposed next step is to arrange a walkthrough with the team lead and record the unclear instructions.” The walkthrough is a proposal. No participant, date, or agreed goal should appear unless confirmed.

If the form asks for a rating, use the employer's actual definitions and discuss the result through its review process. A writing assistant's invented scale should not determine an employee rating, promotion, or compensation decision.

Answer each form question using the supplied evidence. Keep my role,
time period, and team ownership accurate. Do not invent impact,
metrics, praise, difficulties, agreement, or completed follow-up.
Use plain first-person language, with concrete work before adjectives.
Separate completed results from proposed next steps. Flag any claim
that needs evidence and ask a specific question instead of filling it.
Return draft answers plus evidence IDs in a separate review note.
Do not assign a rating or submit the review.

Read the generated verbs carefully. “Wrote,” “reviewed,” “coordinated,” and “led” describe different contributions. Replace a broad verb with the action the record establishes. If an outcome belongs to the team, name the team result and your part in it.

Revise the paragraph, then check the whole answer

Ask for a specific correction: “Keep the three examples and peer-review revision; remove the unmeasured efficiency claim.” This gives the next draft a clear target. An instruction to make everything more impressive can reintroduce the same unsupported result elsewhere.

Before copying into the form, verify dates, quantities, evidence references, and whether a future action is still a proposal. Remove private source links from any version intended for a wider audience.

The performance-review meeting agenda helps organize the later conversation and open questions. Finish the self-evaluation with the work you can explain, the evidence you can show, and the development point you actually want to discuss with your manager.
