Claude web search: find the control and check that a search actually ran

If Claude answers a current question without searching, explicitly ask it to search the web. In the interface with a + → Web search option, enable that option for the chat. In the newer unified Claude experience, there is no separate web-search switch; Claude chooses when to search. A missing switch can therefore be an interface change rather than a fault.

Anthropic documents that difference in its web-search instructions and unified Claude rollout notes, checked October 23, 2026.

Identify which interface you have

In the earlier interface, open the + menu and select Web search. A checkmark indicates it is enabled. If your Team or Enterprise workspace uses this control and the feature is unavailable, an Owner or Primary Owner may need to enable it under Organization settings → Capabilities.

In the newer experience, keep working in the conversation and ask for the lookup. Anthropic is rolling out that experience gradually, so two accounts can show different controls. Repeatedly looking for the old checkbox will not help an account whose interface no longer has it.

Ask for an observable lookup

Suppose a supplier's training page shows an old enrollment deadline. The following is a fictional task prompt, not a claim that a real supplier or search was tested:

Search the web for the current enrollment deadline for [course name]
from [provider name]. Use the provider's own course page or announcement.
Include the year and the course start date so we can distinguish sessions.
If you find only an old session or no deadline, say that clearly.
Link the page that states the deadline. Do not infer it from the start date.

Watch for the search indicator and the resulting citations. An answer describing a deadline from memory has not satisfied the request just because it sounds specific. Ask again for the current provider page if no lookup is shown.

Open the cited source and check which session it describes. A page titled “Fall enrollment” may still carry last year's date. If two provider pages disagree, keep both links and ask the provider which applies before forwarding a deadline to coworkers.

You can provide the exact public page and ask Claude to retrieve it. If retrieval fails, have Claude identify the failed URL and the missing information. Copy the relevant passage into the chat when you can read it yourself, and tell Claude that this is supplied text. A response based on that passage should not be presented as an independently completed live search.

For example:

You could not retrieve the course page. Here is the passage I can read:
[Paste the dated course passage.]
Extract only the stated enrollment deadline and session date.
Label this as supplied text, and flag any missing year or timezone.

Choose a larger investigation only when needed

A single deadline lookup can finish when the official page supports the answer. Comparing several providers and reconciling their policies is a different task. Anthropic's search and research comparison explains that distinction.

If the task now involves documents you already hold, use the Claude PDF workflow to identify the exact document passages. Keep the final deadline beside its source URL and session year so the person receiving your note can check it without repeating the search.
