Open Claude inside the Word document, select the passage tied to a review comment, and ask for a narrowly scoped edit in tracked changes mode. Review the revision in Word before accepting it. This keeps the proposed wording, the comment and your decision in the document your colleagues already use.
Anthropic's Word add-in instructions, checked October 24, 2026, document native tracked revisions and comment-driven editing. Claude for Word is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Its supported clients include Word on the web, qualifying Microsoft 365 Windows builds and qualifying Mac builds; check the listed version requirements before installing the add-in.
Start with the comment's actual request
In this original fictional review, a staff handbook contains this sentence:
Volunteers must complete orientation before their first shift. The coordinator will arrange a session.
A reviewer has anchored this comment to the second sentence:
Who should a volunteer contact, and how far ahead? Approved process: email the volunteer coordinator at least five business days before the first shift. Do not promise a session date.
The comment supplies a process and a timing condition. It does not establish that orientation is available every week or that a request guarantees a place. A revision should answer the two questions without inventing either promise.
An authored candidate is:
Volunteers must complete orientation before their first shift. Email the volunteer coordinator at least five business days before your first shift to request an orientation session.
The candidate retains the prerequisite, identifies the recipient and says when to request the session. It does not say orientation has been booked. These sentences are a teaching example, not output from a live Word session.
Set up a reviewable edit
Use the official installation route, open the intended document and sign in to the add-in. If your organization manages Microsoft add-ins, use its approved deployment route. A Claude subscription alone does not establish that your organization's Word client permits the add-in.
Select the relevant passage and use tracked changes mode. Supply the comment's approved facts and the part of the document that must remain unchanged:
Revise only the selected handbook paragraph in tracked changes mode.
Use the anchored review comment as the request to resolve.
Approved process: a volunteer emails the volunteer coordinator at
least five business days before the first shift to request orientation.
Orientation must be completed before the first shift.
No session date or booking guarantee has been approved.
Keep the existing paragraph style and the orientation prerequisite.
Do not revise other sections, add a contact address or create a new
policy. If the comment requires a missing fact, ask for it separately.
Explain which wording addresses each part of the comment. Leave the
revision for my review; do not accept changes or resolve the comment.
The requested scope matters when a comment sits beside several paragraphs. “Fix this section” can mean changing much more than the reviewer intended. Name the selected paragraph and preserve the surrounding policy explicitly.
Inspect the revision and the comment separately
Anthropic describes edits arriving as revisions that you can accept or reject in Word's native review pane. It also documents editing the text anchored to a comment and replying to its thread. Tracked changes and comments
First compare the changed sentence with the approved process. Check that “business days” survived and that “request” did not become “schedule” or “confirm.” Then inspect the surrounding text: the orientation prerequisite, numbering and paragraph style should still make sense.
A reply saying “updated” is not enough. Verify the actual revision. Conversely, an accurate revision does not settle whether the reviewer agrees that their comment is resolved. Accept or reject the edit yourself, then follow the team's normal comment-resolution process.
If the candidate promises an orientation date, reject that wording and request a change only to the promise. There is no need to regenerate the entire handbook to repair one sentence.
Keep the reviewed Word document as the record
Use Claude's writing workflow when the main problem is voice or paragraph flow. Use creating an editable Word file when no Word document exists yet. Here the task is maintaining revisions and comments inside an existing file.
Before handing the document back, check unresolved comments and unaccepted revisions. Keep the agreed wording in the maintained Word file so the next reviewer can see the decision without reconciling a second copy from a chat.
