The small original example below matches measurement purposes to units from one shared bank. It provides a student worksheet, a separate teacher key, and a contract for optional local HTML practice. The same answer identities survive a change in display order.
Define one relationship for the set
Match each measurement purpose to the unit listed for that purpose in supplied classroom handout U. The response bank contains only unit names and symbols. Do not mix units with instrument names or unrelated definitions in the same list.
The University of Illinois test-question guidance recommends clear matching directions, an explicit reuse rule, homogeneous material, brief items, and more responses than premises. Those design principles inform this example; its questions and handout are original.
Use this fictional handout as the stated source for the answer mapping:
| Source ID | Measurement purpose | Unit used in this handout |
|---|---|---|
| U1 | Length | Meter, m |
| U2 | Mass | Kilogram, kg |
| U3 | Elapsed time | Second, s |
| U4 | Temperature | Kelvin, K |
The wording “from this bank and handout” matters. Length can be expressed in other units elsewhere, but the quiz asks for the available response attached to length in the supplied material.
Write directions students can actually follow
Use these directions on the student sheet:
“For each measurement purpose, choose its matching unit from the shared response bank using handout U. Use each response at most once. There are three questions and four responses, so one response will remain unused. Write the response ID beside each question.”
Then provide the complete student set:
| Premise ID | Measurement purpose | Response |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | Length of a desk edge | _____ |
| P2 | Mass of a sample | _____ |
| P3 | Elapsed time of a run | _____ |
| Response ID | Shared response |
|---|---|
| A | Meter, m |
| B | Kilogram, kg |
| C | Second, s |
| D | Kelvin, K |
Keep all four responses visible together. D is deliberately unused in the key; it is not a forgotten fourth question. If the reader needs a DOCX or PDF worksheet, preserve that student-sheet format and put the teacher key on a separate page or file.
Keep the teacher key tied to IDs and sources
| Premise ID | Correct response ID | Source explanation |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | A | U1 assigns m to length; the premise asks for desk-edge length |
| P2 | B | U2 assigns kg to mass; the premise asks for sample mass |
| P3 | C | U3 assigns s to elapsed time; the premise asks for run duration |
The key pairs P1 with A, not with “the first row of whatever list is displayed.” Reordering the bank as D, B, A, C leaves every response's ID and meaning unchanged. P1 still matches A.
If a layout adds numbered display positions, treat those as presentation labels rather than answer identities. Otherwise a visual rearrangement can become a grading error even when the learner selected the correct unit.
Validate the response set before scoring it
For an optional HTML version, use three native select fields sharing the same bank. Each starts with an unanswered placeholder that has no answer ID. Check first verifies that every premise has a known selection and that no response was reused.
A duplicate is a rule violation, not a partially graded attempt. For example, P1=A, P2=A, P3=C uses A twice. Show a constraint message and no score. Do not silently disable a selected choice in the other fields or change the learner's answers on their behalf.
After a complete, distinct response set passes those checks, award one point per correct pair:
| Response set | Expected feedback |
|---|---|
| P1=A, P2=B, P3=C | 3/3 with U1/U2/U3 explanations |
| P1=A, P2=C, P3=B | 1/3; only P1 matches its source |
| P1=A, P2=A, P3=C | Reuse violation; no score |
| One unanswered premise | Incomplete; no score |
This is feedback on the current three responses, not a saved school grade or proof of mastery. Editing a selection clears an old score until Check runs again. Reset restores unanswered fields and clears feedback.
Review teacher-authored sets too
For a bounded authoring specification, support three through eight premises and four through ten responses, with more responses than premises. Require unique IDs, one supported correct response per premise, and a source reference for each mapping.
Under the one-use rule, the correct response IDs must also be distinct. If two premises need the same correct response, revise the set or explicitly choose a different reuse policy before assigning it. Hold ambiguous or unsupported mappings for teacher review rather than generating a confident answer key.
Copyable quiz prompt
Create a complete matching student worksheet, separate teacher key and optional native HTML practice specification. Respect requested DOCX/PDF worksheet format; HTML practice does not replace it. Use original supplied handout U: U1 length->m; U2 mass->kg; U3 elapsed time->s; U4 temperature->K.
Student premises: P1 desk-edge length, P2 sample mass, P3 elapsed run time. Shared response IDs A=meter m,B=kilogram kg,C=second s,D=kelvin K. Directions: match using handout U and this bank, use each response at most once, one of four responses remains unused. Teacher key P1-A/U1,P2-B/U2,P3-C/U3; D unused. Keep stable IDs if display order changes to D,B,A,C.
Optional practice uses native labeled selects with unanswered placeholder, Check and Reset, no drag-only interface. First validate all required selections, known IDs and no reuse; duplicate/unknown/missing produces constraint text and no score, never silent answer changes or disabled competing choices. Then grade current complete distinct responses one point per premise with source explanation, out of 3. Correct A/B/C gives 3/3; A/C/B gives 1/3; A/A/C reuse violation; unanswered incomplete. Selection edits clear old score; Reset all unanswered/feedback.
Teacher-authored scope 3..8 premises, 4..10 homogeneous responses with responses>premises, unique IDs and one source-supported answer per premise. Correct keys distinct under one-use rule; ambiguous mappings held for review. No unsupported AI answer generation. TextContent labels/feedback, native source handout/key separate; no timer, saved grades, mastery or learning-gain claim.
Provide exact worksheet/key, local practice contract and test matrix. Verify IDs after reorder, all constraints, scores, keyboard focus, actual article width and 360 px. Mark unexecuted runtime checks not_tested; no storage/export/host guarantee.
Keep the handout and key with the practice version
Retain the native worksheet, handout, and separate teacher key when you change the response order. If you prepare an HTML practice version in NOS, the supplied product evidence supports HTML saving and rendering; verify selections, constraints, and feedback in the actual workspace before treating that version as tested. Explore NOS with prepared HTML, keeping the stable pair IDs beside the source mapping so a rearranged bank cannot quietly rearrange the answers.
