Start with a blank reusable sheet
Use a class/period header and one stable student row per record. For this original Room 8 demonstration, the four assignment headers are:
- Reading response — October 14 — maximum 10 points.
- Source check — October 16 — maximum 5 points.
- Draft — October 20 — maximum 20 points.
- Revision — October 23 — maximum 10 points.
The dates are fictional 2026 teaching inputs. A reusable version should leave the student labels and every score box empty while retaining the supplied assignment headers and legend. Do not prepopulate sample scores on a sheet intended for actual recording.
The TeacherPapers description and FAQ distinguish a handwritten paper grid from online grade calculation/storage. The Maple Planners page also identifies a letter-size printable record. The grid here is original, not a downloaded PDF or a claim that its print layout has been tested.
Read the fictional filled example correctly

| Fictional student | Reading response /10 | Source check /5 | Draft /20 | Revision /10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student A | 8 | 4 | ||
| Student B | 0 | EX | ||
| Student C | 9 | 5 |
Legend: Blank = not recorded. 0 = recorded zero. EX = excused only under the teacher's supplied policy. This example assumes that policy permits the displayed EX; it does not establish a policy for your school.
Student B's source check must not become zero. The future draft and revision columns must stay blank. No course average appears because weighting and missing/excused-score treatment have not been supplied.
Plan the four- and eight-assignment layouts
Keep the first four assignment identities and student rows unchanged when moving to an eight-column version. Add four labeled [ASSIGNMENT TO SUPPLY] headers; their dates, point maxima, and score cells remain empty until confirmed. Do not squeeze the original labels into unreadable abbreviations solely to fit more columns.
For a paper version, check the chosen page size, orientation, writing space, and repeated student/assignment labels across pages. For a screen preview, preserve the row/column association so a score cannot appear under a neighboring assignment. If a preview stacks records on a narrow screen, repeat each assignment's name/date/maximum next to its value.
Printing through a browser is a later implementation check. A “Download PDF” label should not appear unless that route actually exists and has been tested. The paper record and authorized school system remain the places for real student information.
Copy a paper-grid prompt
Draft an original printable gradebook specification in US English.
Class and recording period: [inputs]
Assignment IDs/names/dates/maximum points: [inputs]
Required row count and neutral demonstration labels: [inputs]
School policy for zero, missing and excused work: [paste policy]
Paper size, orientation and required record format: [inputs]
Provide a completely blank reusable grid and a separately labeled fictional worked example only if requested. Keep assignment and student-row identities stable across supplied four/eight-column layouts. Show assignment name/date/max points and an explicit blank/0/EX legend. Do not calculate totals or averages without the actual supplied weighting and missing/excused policy. Keep future score boxes blank.
Specify legible handwriting space, repeated labels for multiple pages, and narrow-screen row/assignment association. Describe print-view requirements as pending browser implementation/testing, not a working PDF download or stored grade service. Do not invent real pupils, scores, excusals, policies, print verification, or results. Mark gaps [NEEDED: input]. Keep actual records in approved school locations.
Check the blank sheet before using the fictional example as a layout reference. Confirm the headers, point maxima, and score-state legend, then record only the actual scores and authorized marks in the paper or school record.
Optional: inspect the fictional preview in NOS
NOS can save and render a prepared HTML preview with demonstration student labels. Use it to read assignment headings and row alignment; keep real student records in the authorized system and verify the actual print layout through the chosen production route.
