This professional development plan template connects an individual development goal to a feasible learning experience and evidence of application. The worked example compares two opportunities and revises the practice after a specific feedback note.

Start with the direction the person wants to develop
The original fictional example concerns an experienced archive assistant who wants to learn to facilitate short contributor briefings. The supplied starting evidence says the assistant writes clear record notes; no facilitation demonstration is supplied. The team would like backup briefing coverage, but no new role, promotion, or responsibility transfer is promised.
Duke Human Resources' professional-development planning guidance considers employee interests, organizational needs, learning opportunities, application, feedback, and ongoing review. Use those questions to build an agreement suited to the individual. Duke's own policies and review arrangements do not establish requirements for your employer.
Here is the proposed development agreement:
| Field | Worked planning entry |
|---|---|
| Chosen capability | Facilitate a short briefing that gives contributors a clear purpose, next actions, and a response to a clarification question. |
| Practice goal | Prepare and co-facilitate one 10-minute practice briefing using dummy records, then discuss the observation against agreed criteria. |
| Learning route | Observe an experienced facilitator, prepare the briefing, and rehearse with feedback before an agreed practice opportunity. |
| Application evidence | Briefing outline, the actual reviewer's notes on purpose/next actions/clarification, and the assistant's reflection on the next practice. |
| Support and permissions | Mentor availability, appropriate dummy materials, practice permission, time, and any resources remain to confirm. |
| Review arrangement | Agree a review date and who will observe. Keep actual progress and agreements blank until they occur. |
The plan records a future capability the person wants to build. It is not a current skills rating or a calendar of compulsory onboarding activities.
Compare the learning opportunities against the goal
| Proposed opportunity | What it can contribute | What still needs arranging |
|---|---|---|
| Observe, then co-facilitate a practice briefing | Connects a model of the work with an attempt, observation, and feedback on the chosen capability. | Facilitator/mentor time, permission, suitable materials, and a review opportunity. |
| Standalone general facilitation course | May provide background and techniques to consider. | Actual course suitability, time/resources, and an applied practice opportunity afterward. Attendance alone supplies no demonstration here. |
Choose Learning activity in the example to inspect the course option. Then choose Application evidence to see the practice and observation the goal needs. Neither opportunity is booked or approved by the page.
A fictional or sanitized planning copy in your NOS workspace can help the individual and mentor read the options beside the capability. They can clarify a static goal such as “Improve presentation skills” to name the briefing behavior they intend to practice. Keep the actual employee agreement and private feedback in the employer's approved records; the review page is not a personnel system.
Choose the route with the individual, taking time, access, interest, and support into account. If the proposed mentor is unavailable, revise the opportunity rather than leaving a named support step that nobody can provide.
Make the practice and review criteria concrete
The original dummy records for this exercise are:
| Record | Displayed label | Dummy index entry |
|---|---|---|
| D1 | Booklet A | Booklet A |
| D2 | Booklet B | Booklet C |
The practice task is to compare the labels with the dummy index and record mismatches in a practice question list. It does not authorize changing a real source index. Actual approval to use these or other practice materials still needs to come from the relevant owner.
Ask the reviewer to observe three things: whether the opening states the practice purpose, whether the closing makes the next actions clear, and whether the facilitator handles the supplied question, “Should I correct a mismatch in the source index?” The exercise's answer is to record the mismatch for review without editing the index.
The original proposed opening is: “We are practicing how to compare record labels with a dummy index and report a mismatch.” The initial closing is: “Then finish the review.” That closing leaves the required action underspecified.
Revise the next practice from the feedback
The example's explicitly modeled feedback is:
“The opening purpose is clear. The closing does not tell contributors what to do with a mismatch or whether they may edit the index.”
Choose Revised closing practice. The next action becomes a focused rehearsal of these instructions:
“Compare D1 and D2 with the dummy index. Put any mismatch in the practice question list and name the record ID. Do not change the source index. Bring the question list to the reviewer.”
The assistant can then rehearse the clarification response: “For this exercise, record the mismatch for review; do not correct the index.” Ask the reviewer whether a contributor can now explain the next action and its boundary.
The feedback is invented teaching material, not an actual employee review. The revised wording is a proposed next practice, not evidence of a pass. A course certificate, an observation note, and successful application in an agreed task are different records; keep the plan clear about which one the goal needs.

Connect one chosen goal to suitable opportunities, applied practice,
evidence and recurring review. Do not invent agreement, dates,
competence, promotion, mentor availability or permissions. Attendance
is not a demonstration. Keep private employee records outside this page.
Include this original fictional experienced archive-assistant example:
Interest: short contributor-briefing facilitation. Starting evidence:
clear written record notes; no facilitation demonstration supplied.
Team need: backup briefing coverage, not a promised role or promotion.
Goal: prepare/co-facilitate one 10-minute dummy-record practice;
communicate purpose/next actions and answer one clarification question.
Compare observing/co-facilitating with a proposed standalone general
course. Course may offer background but needs applied practice too.
Mentor, resources, date, time and permission remain TO CONFIRM.
Dummy D1 label Booklet A/index Booklet A; D2 label Booklet B/index
Booklet C. Task: compare and put mismatches in a practice question
list. Do not alter source index. Actual material approval still needed.
Original opening: We are practicing how to compare record labels
with a dummy index and report a mismatch.
Original closing: Then finish the review.
Observation criteria: purpose clear; next actions clear; answer:
Should I correct a mismatch in the source index?
Exercise answer: record mismatch for review, do not edit source index.
Modeled feedback, not actual employee evidence: opening purpose
clear; closing unclear about mismatch action and index-edit boundary.
Revised closing practice: Compare D1 and D2 with the dummy index.
Put any mismatch in the practice question list and name the record ID.
Do not change the source index. Bring the question list to the reviewer.
Rehearse the supplied clarification answer; obtain actual observation
before changing any progress record. No pass, promotion or approval.
Provide Learning activity, Application evidence and Revised closing
practice selections. Show goal/support/evidence/open agreements with
each view. Actual progress remains blank. Include a blank development
agreement and temporary reflection; preserve typing and confirm reset.
No employee grading, private HR storage, course booking or automated
competence inference. At least 16px text, native labeled controls,
visible focus, stacked records at 360px without overflow. Inline
CSS/JavaScript, no external assets, network or storage. Return full HTML.
Read the generated goal and practice together. The review should inspect whether the briefing tells a contributor what to do, not mark the capability complete because the assistant attended something or rewrote a sentence.
Agree what the next observation should answer
At the next development conversation, ask whether the selected opportunity is still feasible and what evidence the reviewer will bring back. Record the actual support and review arrangement before treating them as commitments.
For this example, the next observation concerns the closing: can a contributor describe where to record D2's mismatch and why the source index stays unchanged? Use that response to choose the next practice focus.
