The companion provides a 45-minute workshop schedule, an original pronoun-reference model and a conference-note builder. It turns supplied notes into an inspectable exit record without grading them. A reader can mark the meaning still unresolved, keeping the unanswered question available for the next conference.

Model a break in meaning with original text
Use this short demonstration:
| Sentence ID | Original sentence |
|---|---|
| S1 | Leah put the blue folder on the shelf. |
| S2 | Noah set a red folder beside it. |
| S3 | He took the red folder to the desk. |
Read S3, pause at “He,” and name the question: “Who took the red folder?” Reread S2 and S3. In the intended model reading, Noah is the subject placing the red folder in S2, and S3 continues that action with the red folder. The demonstration key links He to Noah, rather than choosing Leah just because her name appeared first.
Show the evidence chain on the plan: unclear word → reread S2/S3 → Noah and the red folder → revised explanation. This is a teacher think-aloud, not a fictional report that a student independently understood the text.
Treat “it” in S2 as a separate question. Under the model's intended folder-to-folder reading, it refers to the blue folder introduced in S1. Do not assume every pronoun in the passage points to the same person or object.
Also notice a useful limitation: S1 names both a folder and a shelf, so a reader may ask whether “beside it” means beside the shelf. Retain that question as unresolved without additional context rather than automatically marking the alternative wrong. The teacher key records the intended reading; it is not proof that the wording eliminates every competing interpretation.
Fit conferences inside the reading phase
Use this original 45-minute schedule:
| Elapsed time | Phase | Planned work |
|---|---|---|
| 0–8 minutes | Model | Demonstrate the pause, rereading check, evidence, and unresolved-question option |
| 8–30 minutes | Independent reading and conferences | Learners use teacher-approved accessible texts; teacher holds selected conferences |
| 30–38 minutes | Partner explanation | Each reader explains a recorded break/check/evidence chain |
| 38–45 minutes | Share and exit | Discuss a strategy use; complete a resolved-or-unresolved exit record |
The four phases total 8 + 22 + 8 + 7 = 45 minutes. Plan three illustrative three-minute conferences at elapsed minutes 10–13, 16–19, and 24–27. Their nine minutes occur inside the 22-minute reading phase; they do not extend the lesson to 54 minutes.
Other learners continue their planned reading during those conferences. Three slots do not mean the teacher conferred with every learner. Record the actual conference roster and duration afterward rather than filling those fields with assumed observations.
Use a conference sheet that captures the check
Provide a blank sheet for each learner:
| Field | Actual learner/teacher record |
|---|---|
| Approved text and exact page/sentence | _____ |
| Where meaning became unclear | _____ |
| What specifically was unclear | _____ |
| Rereading check tried | _____ |
| Exact text evidence found | _____ |
| Explanation after checking | _____ |
| Now clearer or still unresolved | _____ |
| Support given and next review step | _____ |
Ask “Which words support that?” after the learner explains a check. If the referent is still ambiguous or needed context is unavailable, keep the unresolved status. Do not convert quiet time, pages read, or a completed form into an understanding score.
Learners may choose different approved texts while practicing the same strategy. Their evidence therefore needs their own page or sentence reference. The Noah/blue-folder demonstration key cannot grade every independent-reading answer.
Build an exit record
Enter the approved text location, the confusing word or sentence, the rereading check, and the exact evidence found. Select Now clearer or Still unresolved before pressing Build conference note. Every field stays blank until someone supplies it; the model passage is a teacher demonstration rather than a learner observation.
The generated note repeats the entered evidence and its chosen status. If a field is missing, the page asks for it instead of inventing understanding. Completed notes are material for teacher review. They do not turn quiet reading time, a filled box or a chosen status into a comprehension score. Keep required accommodations and actual learner support in the school’s maintained plan.
Copy this prompt
Create a readers’ workshop planning companion with a 45-minute schedule and a local conference-note builder. Schedule: 0–8 model; 8–30 independent reading and conferences; 30–38 partner explanation; 38–45 share and exit. Three illustrative 3-minute conference slots are 10–13, 16–19 and 24–27, all inside the reading block; do not add them to create 54 minutes.
Original teacher model: S1 Leah put the blue folder on the shelf. S2 Noah set a red folder beside it. S3 He took the red folder to the desk. The intended model connects He to Noah through S2/S3. The it reference may mean the blue folder, while beside the shelf remains a possible ambiguity; preserve a request for clarification. Keep this preparation key distinct from real learner observations.
Provide blank labeled fields for text/page/sentence, confusing location, rereading check and exact evidence. Add Now clearer and Still unresolved buttons, then Build conference note and Clear. Require all fields and an explicit status. Output a literal-text note that repeats supplied facts without grading or adding responses. An edit clears the old note. Keep the school DOCX plan, approved texts and actual conference records as primary materials; this HTML is a planning and recording companion, not a native document export.
Return one complete HTML file. Put the model text,45-minute schedule and conference-note fields in readable sections that stack on a phone. Label each field and the two status buttons clearly. The built note should repeat only supplied evidence and preserve an unresolved status; editing a field must clear the previous note.
Start the next conference with the exact question
Copy the useful note into the school’s conference record, retaining the text reference and support actually used. If the meaning remains unresolved, plan which nearby passage or added context to inspect next. For a colleague preparing the conference routine, NOS can render the HTML overview with the model text and blank evidence fields. Use the overview to plan the conversation; let actual learner evidence determine what follows.
