ChatGPT agent: where to start now and how to keep a task bounded

If you are looking for the old ChatGPT agent control, start with the current product guidance: OpenAI says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and directs longer tasks to ChatGPT Work. Its agent help page still contains older setup instructions farther down. Follow the overview and the linked Work documentation rather than assuming that typing /agent will restore the old mode. For a task involving websites, start a task in Work on web or mobile and describe the result you need. ChatGPT decides whether to use its cloud browser or an available connected app. Cloud browser access depends on plan, region, rollout, and workspace permissions. Current cloud browser guide

The practical question is what to delegate. “Find options” can mean collecting public information, entering a registration form, or making a commitment. Specify the stopping point before the task begins.

Give one research task a clear finish

Consider a fictional office coordinator comparing professional workshops. The team needs public dates, prices, and cancellation terms before choosing an event. It does not need anyone to register yet.

Use a request like this, replacing the brackets:

Compare up to four publicly listed [TOPIC] workshops in [CITY]
between [START DATE] and [END DATE] for an employee attending alone.

Use organizers' public event pages. Return event name, organizer,
date and time zone, venue or online format, published price and its
conditions, cancellation terms, and a direct source URL for each row.
Mark anything not publicly stated as "Not stated."

Read public pages only. Do not sign in, register, contact organizers,
submit forms, accept paid offers, or provide personal information.
If a price or condition requires registration, report that limitation.

Finish with the comparison and unresolved questions. Do not choose
or book an event on my behalf.

The task has a useful result even when a website withholds a price: the table can say which information is public and which question needs a human follow-up. An empty cell should not become a guessed fee.

This is an illustrative task brief. No workshop search or booking was executed for this guide.

Inspect the next step before widening the task

Follow the task's progress in the conversation. OpenAI documents pauses for input, sign-in, or confirmation, and a takeover option when you need to operate the cloud browser yourself. A website may also block automated access even when it opens normally in your own browser. Browser progress and takeover

In the workshop example, a registration page is a boundary. A suitable follow-up is:

Keep this task public and read-only. Record that the organizer does
not show the final price without registration. Continue with the
other public sources; do not create an account to fill this gap.

If the task opens an unrelated event or starts using a different city, stop it and correct the criteria. More browsing will not repair an incorrect brief.

If you later decide to register, make that a separate, specific instruction after choosing the event. Review the date, attendee details, full cost, and cancellation terms before allowing a submission. The research request above does not authorize that action.

Check the comparison against the organizers

Open the source for the strongest candidate. Confirm that the date belongs to the upcoming event rather than last year's page. Look for whether a price excludes tax, applies only to members, or covers an online recording rather than attendance.

For example, a fictional source saying “Member rate: $85; public registration opens next month” supports a conditional member price. It does not support “Anyone can attend for $85.” Keep that condition in the comparison where the person choosing the event will see it.

Check the second candidate the same way. A comparison is only useful if its rows describe comparable things. A two-day workshop and a ninety-minute introductory session may both match the topic while serving different needs.

If your task only requires a sourced answer from public pages, ChatGPT Search covers that smaller research workflow. Use Work when the job needs the longer task and deliverable you have described.

Finish with the checked comparison, the source links, and the questions still unanswered. The coordinator can then select an event with the actual conditions visible.
