Delete a Claude chat while keeping the work you still need

On Claude's web app, find the conversation in the sidebar or Chats and tasks, open its three-dot menu, choose Delete, then confirm. Open the conversation first when titles are similar. Selective chat deletion lets you remove an abandoned discussion without removing the account containing your other work.

Anthropic's delete-or-rename instructions, checked October 24, 2026, cover consumer Claude conversations and device-specific controls. Organization and commercial data questions can follow different policies; use the commercial guidance linked there for workplace retention requirements.

Identify the conversation by its contents

Suppose these fictional chats appear in your history:

Conversation What it contains Intended action
Workshop outline Abandoned agenda with the old room Delete
Workshop outline — final Approved agenda and equipment decisions Keep
Workshop handover Notes another organizer still needs Keep

Search for the topic if necessary, then open the abandoned draft and inspect its opening messages and final exchange. A short sidebar title may truncate the word “final.” Rename the retained discussion first if that makes the two easier to distinguish.

Before deletion, save any permitted text or generated file you still need and open the saved copy. A chat describing a spreadsheet is different from the spreadsheet file. For a broader personal record, the Claude export guide explains the export workflow.

Delete one chat or a selected group on the web

For a single conversation, open the three-dot menu beside the intended entry, select Delete and read the confirmation before accepting it.

For several conversations, open Chats and tasks. Use a conversation's three-dot menu and choose Select, then check the additional conversations to remove. Review the selected entries before choosing Delete and confirming. Anthropic also documents Select all; avoid that control when your task is to preserve the final workshop and handover discussions.

A useful small-batch check is to remove just the abandoned draft first, then return to the two retained discussions. Confirm that both still open before selecting a larger group. This is a selection check, not a claim about when every backend copy is erased.

Use the mobile control for the right conversation

On iOS, touch and hold the conversation in the chat list, choose Delete and confirm. You can also use the three-dot menu in an open conversation. On Android, the open conversation's three-dot menu includes Delete; confirm the prompt. Android's chat list also has a checklist control for selecting multiple chats before using the trash icon. Keep the selection small enough to review on the phone. If the title is abbreviated, open the discussion rather than guessing from its position in the list. Do not treat a menu in another AI app as a guide to Claude's current controls.

Know which records the action removes

Anthropic says consumer chat deletion removes the conversation from history immediately and deletes it from its backend systems within 30 days. The same help page explains that other account data, including projects and account information, remains until separately deleted. Consult its linked privacy guidance for the retention question relevant to your account.

Deleting a conversation is therefore a narrower decision than deleting a Claude account. It also does not remove a copy you previously saved outside Claude; review those files separately if your goal includes removing them.

After removing the fictional abandoned outline, open the final outline and handover, then check that the old draft is absent from the intended history view. Keep the records you meant to keep and finish with that verified selection, rather than deleting the whole account to tidy a few conversations.
