That suits a finished piece of work you may need later. A workshop-planning conversation, for example, can leave the sidebar after the event while remaining available when you plan the next one.
Archive the finished conversation
Open the menu for the specific chat and select Archive. Check the title first if several chats have similar names. ChatGPT does not ask for a second confirmation when archiving. Archive a chat
For a first cleanup, choose one completed conversation rather than archiving everything. This gives you a small, reversible change whose result you can check before organizing the rest of your history.
Suppose your sidebar contains these fictional chats:
| Conversation | Your next task | Sensible action |
|---|---|---|
| October workshop room comparison | Keep the decision for next year's planning | Archive after checking the final decision is there |
| November speaker invitation | Finish the invitation today | Leave accessible in the sidebar |
| Duplicate test with no useful content | Remove material you have no reason to retain | Review separately before considering deletion |
These are organization choices, not rules ChatGPT applies automatically. The useful distinction is whether you still need quick access and whether you want to keep the content.
Find the archived chat and bring it back
Search for a distinctive phrase from the conversation. Archived chats remain searchable. To browse the archive directly, open Settings > Data controls and select Archived chats or View archived chats; select Manage if it appears. Choose Unarchive to return the conversation to regular history. Manage archived chats
For the workshop example, try a phrase such as “room comparison” rather than a broad word like “plan.” Open the result and read the decision itself before reusing it. Finding last year's discussion does not establish that its dates or prices still apply.
If the chat does not appear, use the steps for searching ChatGPT history to check the account, workspace, and search filter.
Know what archiving leaves in place
Archived conversations follow the same retention rules as other saved chats. Archiving is not a privacy deletion. Deleting a chat is permanent and cannot be reversed through ChatGPT or Support. Also, archiving a conversation used for scheduled-task results can pause that task on a later run. Retention and task caveat
Keep an active task's conversation available until you have reviewed the task's schedule and output. For ordinary finished work, archive one chat, find it again, and confirm that you can read the part you wanted to keep. Then continue the cleanup.
