Use ChatGPT with Slack: choose where the conversation happens

To ask ChatGPT about Slack messages, connect Slack in ChatGPT's Apps or Plugins and authorize the intended workspace. To ask your organization's assistant inside Slack, use @ChatGPT where your administrator has installed and enabled it. These are separate routes with different account and access rules. Connected Slack in ChatGPT, @ChatGPT inside Slack

Choose the route before troubleshooting. Finding Slack in one interface does not establish that your organization has configured the other.

Connect Slack when your question starts in ChatGPT

Find Slack in Apps or Plugins, select Connect, and complete authorization for the workspace containing the messages. Eligibility depends on your ChatGPT plan, region, workspace settings, and Slack permissions. Multiple Slack workspace connections are supported: under Settings > Plugins > Slack, use Connect another account when available. Current connection instructions

For a first question, choose a thread you can already open. A specific discussion makes it easier to tell whether the response used the right channel and time period.

This original example asks about a release decision rather than a general weekly recap:

Use connected Slack to review [THREAD LINK] in [WORKSPACE].
Read only; do not post, create reminders, or change Slack settings.

Did the team approve a release date, or only propose one?
List the proposed date, any later approval, and unresolved conditions.
For each conclusion, give the author, message date, and source link.
If the available messages do not establish approval, say so.

Open the supporting links. A Tuesday proposal and a Wednesday reply saying “waiting on testing” do not establish a confirmed release date. Check the later replies and any explicit approval rather than accepting a confident summary of the first message.

Unlike a maintained Google Drive policy document, a Slack decision may depend on the order of messages and who replied. Keep the condition attached to the conclusion.

Use the organization assistant when you stay in Slack

In an enabled internal channel, mention @ChatGPT and include the request's context. The assistant must be added to the channel. It uses an organization-configured service account and connections; it does not automatically inherit your personal ChatGPT memories, chat history, or tool access. Shared replies are visible to conversation participants. Slack guests and Slack Connect channels are unsupported. Organization-assistant behavior

Start with information included in your message. Then test a specific permitted source if the work requires one. Your ability to open a file does not by itself establish that the assistant can read it through its configured connection.

Diagnose the missing source before broadening access

For connected Slack search, check that you authorized the intended workspace and can open the message yourself. Deleted or retention-expired content may be unavailable through Slack's APIs. Slack search limitations

For @ChatGPT, ask the administrator where it is enabled and which connection it uses. Include the message link, error, and approximate time when reporting a failure. Keep the final release note tied to the actual approval message, with any remaining condition visible.
