arrow in JavaScript: reusable card price formatting

Build reusable card price formatting with arrow. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A product list repeats the same price formatting for 12, 3, and 28. Giving that operation a small named function keeps the display rule in one place and makes it easy to pass into an array transformation.

An expression-bodied arrow function returns its expression automatically. Here, formatPrice turns each number into a dollar label, and map applies it to the three prices. The finished result is a list of "$12.00", "$3.00", and "$28.00".

An editable reusable card price formatting prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Pass a small formatter into map

The definition price => '$' + price.toFixed(2) has one parameter and one expression. There are no body braces, so the expression becomes the returned value without a return statement.

Passing formatPrice to data.map calls that function once for each price. toFixed(2) supplies two decimal places as text, and the dollar prefix produces the display label. The original numeric array remains available for calculations.

The surrounding immediately invoked function in the sample simply defines the formatter locally and returns the mapped labels. The important reusable part is formatPrice, which could also be called directly for a single price.

const data = [
  12,
  3,
  28
];
const result = (()=>{const formatPrice = price => '$' + price.toFixed(2);return data.map(formatPrice);})();
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  "$12.00",
  "$3.00",
  "$28.00"
]

A complete, copyable HTML starter for arrow, with editable input and visible output.

A block body needs an explicit return

Adding braces changes an arrow into a block body. A block body needs an explicit return; price => { '$' + price.toFixed(2); } returns undefined. This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when adding a second statement to a compact formatter.

Arrows do not have their own this or arguments binding, and they cannot be called as constructors with new. They are a good fit for this value-in, label-out callback, but not a universal replacement for methods that rely on their own this.

The dollar sign is a sample display convention. For locale-aware currency formatting, use a deliberate formatting rule rather than assuming prefixing a symbol handles every currency.

Rewrite the arrow without changing the labels

Rewrite formatPrice with braces and an explicit return, then confirm the three labels stay identical. Add a temporary local calculation before the return to see why a block body can be useful.

Next, deliberately remove return and inspect the failed output in a copied starter. Undefined array entries can appear as null in JSON serialization, so read the function body as well as the display when diagnosing the missing result.

The MDN reference for Arrow function expressions documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

A reusable formatting callback is easier to review when its source numbers remain visible. Share the complete example through HTML to link with NOS so someone can try another price. Keep it labeled as display formatting; the browser sample neither charges a customer nor stores a shared product catalog.

Questions people ask

What does arrow do in this example?

An expression-bodied arrow returns its result implicitly. map applies the formatter to every price.

What is the main mistake to avoid with arrow?

Arrows use lexical this and cannot be constructors. Adding braces requires an explicit return.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
