A metric has changed by -18. The card needs a decrease badge, while the numerical label still needs the full size of the change. Comparing the sign and preserving the amount keeps those jobs separate.
Math.sign returns a direction indicator. For this sample it returns -1. That is a useful input for choosing a decrease label; it is not the amount of the decrease and should not replace the original -18.

Use Changed data to compare another sample, or edit the JSON and choose Update preview. Original data restores the starting case.

Use the sign for a direction badge
For an ordinary negative number, Math.sign returns -1. Positive numbers return 1, and zero returns zero. The method reads the number without changing it.
A badge can use these results to choose decrease, increase, or unchanged. A separate amount display uses the original value or its magnitude. That separation avoids a common mistake where the card shows -1 as if the metric had changed by one unit.
Decide what each direction means for your metric. An increase in visits may be desirable, while an increase in unresolved errors may not be. Sign provides direction; your interface supplies the meaning and color.
const data = -18;
const result = Math.sign(data);
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
-1

Invalid is different from unchanged
NaN stays NaN. Do not send every result that is neither 1 nor -1 into an unchanged label, because an invalid calculation is different from a true zero change.
Signed zero is also preserved: Math.sign(-0) returns -0. Most everyday status cards can deliberately treat both zeros as unchanged, but a numerical diagnostic may need to distinguish them. JSON output alone hides this distinction.
For data arriving as text, perform explicit conversion and validation before assigning a direction. A blank value should not quietly become an unchanged badge merely because a permissive numeric conversion produced zero.
Test increase, decrease, and no change
Try -18, 18, and 0. The amount changes with the input, while the direction result should be -1, 1, and 0. Build labels for all three rather than a two-way positive-or-negative branch.
In a copied starter, add a fourth invalid state using Number.isFinite before classifying the sign. For a metric card, test the wording and color against what an increase actually means in that context; green should not automatically mean positive.

The MDN reference for Math.sign() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.
For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.
Share a working explanation
Someone reviewing a metric needs to see both the direction and the amount. Share the complete example through HTML to link on NOS so they can try increases, decreases, and no change. Use fictional observations; the shared file does not subscribe to or synchronize a real metrics feed.
