A diagnostic reports -12.6, but one part of the interface needs only its integer portion. Rounding to the nearest value or always rounding downward would change that portion in different ways.
Math.trunc removes the fractional part toward zero. The example returns -12. Keep the signed decimal beside it so the reader can see exactly what was discarded, rather than mistaking the integer portion for a more precise measurement.

Take the integer portion toward zero
Math.trunc(data) returns the integer portion of the number. For positive 12.6 it returns 12; for negative -12.6 it returns -12. Neither call changes the source value.
That makes trunc different from floor on negative numbers. Floor(-12.6) is -13 because it chooses the greatest integer no larger than the original value. Trunc follows the direction toward zero instead.
The operation is useful when an interface genuinely asks for the integer portion, such as a diagnostic display or a separated whole-and-fractional breakdown. It does not establish a general policy for rounding prices, estimates, or quantities.
const data = -12.6;
const result = Math.trunc(data);
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
-12

Truncation loses detail and can preserve negative zero
Dropping the fractional part loses information. If a later calculation needs the original measurement, use the original data, not the truncated display value. Reusing a value chosen for display can produce a different total.
Avoid replacing this clear operation with a bitwise shortcut such as double bitwise NOT. Bitwise operations use a different integer conversion model and can give surprising results for large values. Math.trunc states the intended operation directly.
For values between -1 and 0, trunc can return negative zero. Plain JSON output shows that as 0; a signed-number diagnostic may need an explicit Object.is check if the sign matters.
Compare trunc and floor for signed values
Try 12.9, -12.9, and -0.9. Compare trunc with floor for each input and note which results differ. The negative cases are the important tests, rather than just repeating positive examples.
For a useful extension, display the integer portion and the remainder separately. Calculate the remainder from the original value minus its truncated portion, and give both labels units. That makes the lost fraction visible instead of quietly treating the shortened number as the full measurement.

The MDN reference for Math.trunc() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.
For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.
Share a working explanation
Someone reviewing a diagnostic should be able to distinguish truncation from rounding. Share the complete comparison through HTML to link on NOS so they can try signed inputs themselves. Preserve the original measurement in the demo; the shared HTML is a calculation example, not a measurement-recording service.
