Object.fromEntries in JavaScript: settings pairs to a lookup

Build settings pairs to a lookup with Object.fromEntries. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Settings sometimes arrive as pairs: theme with light, density with comfortable, and language with en. Your UI code would rather read settings.theme than search through those pairs each time. Object.fromEntries() builds that lookup object.

The finished result exposes theme, density, and language as properties. The source remains a list of pairs, which lets you compare the incoming format with the format your application wants.

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Object.fromEntries with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

Object.fromEntries(data) reads each entry as a key-value pair and creates a new object from them. In the supplied example, the pair ['theme', 'light'] becomes the theme property with the value light.

The other two pairs become density and language properties. The new object can be read with ordinary property access, while the source pairs remain unchanged.

The method accepts an iterable of pairs, not only an array. A Map is another common input, but this JSON-based demo uses an array so you can edit the keys and values directly without constructing a Map first.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  [
    "theme",
    "light"
  ],
  [
    "density",
    "comfortable"
  ],
  [
    "language",
    "en"
  ]
];
const result = Object.fromEntries(data);
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

{
  "theme": "light",
  "density": "comfortable",
  "language": "en"
}
The starter shows the Object.fromEntries operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Object.fromEntries; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

If the same key appears twice, the later value replaces the earlier one in the resulting object. A second theme pair does not create two theme settings. Decide whether that last-value-wins behavior matches your settings contract.

Each input entry needs a meaningful key and value. A syntactically valid JSON array can still have the wrong shape for this conversion. When accepting untrusted settings, validate the allowed keys and their value types before using or merging the generated object elsewhere.

Make the behavior your own

Add ['theme', 'dark'] after the existing pairs, keeping valid JSON syntax. Predict the final theme value before running the preview: the later pair should win.

In the copied starter, inspect result.theme and compare it with the original pair list. Then try [] and observe the empty object. Finally, add a simple list of allowed setting names before applying the result, so an unexpected pair does not silently become a configuration option your UI never intended to support.

A second settings pairs to a lookup sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Object.fromEntries. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A settings conversion is ready for feedback when duplicate keys and empty input have clear behavior. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can try those cases with fictional settings. NOS shares the working example; it does not save these preferences to an account or synchronize them across visitors.

Questions people ask

What does Object.fromEntries do in this example?

fromEntries creates properties from each supplied pair on a new object.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.fromEntries?

Duplicate keys overwrite earlier values. Validate untrusted key names before merging data elsewhere.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
