Someone switches off SMS notifications, but email and push should remain selected. The useful feedback is both the updated selection and whether anything was actually removed. This example returns those two answers without altering the original settings payload.
The returned object shows removed as true and channels as email and push. These two fields tell different parts of the story: an entry existed, and these entries remain afterward. If the requested channel was absent, the remaining selection might look identical, but the removed flag would show that this run did not change anything.

Try the result before changing the rule
Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Follow one run
The working Set starts with three channels. delete removes sms and returns true because the value existed. The wrapper shows that boolean beside the remaining values. Trying an absent channel returns false and leaves the working collection unchanged; the source JSON is untouched.
const data = {
"channels": [
"email",
"sms",
"push"
],
"remove": "sms"
};
const result = (() => { const channels = new Set(data.channels); const removed = channels.delete(data.remove); return {removed, channels:Array.from(channels)}; })();
console.log(result);
The starting sample returns:
{
"removed": true,
"channels": [
"email",
"push"
]
}
The input is JSON-friendly, while the working collection is a Set. That distinction explains why the source panel can retain repeated values even when the result does not. When the result is a list, the wrapper converts the collection for display; a boolean or count is shown directly.

Check the case that changes the answer
Set.delete returns a boolean, not the removed value or an updated Set. Capture the collection separately if your interface needs to redraw the remaining selections.
The delete operation edits the working Set in place. The source panel still shows sms because it displays the JSON used to construct that Set, not a live view into its contents. If your application needs to save updated settings, use the resulting channels array deliberately; this demonstration never submits preferences anywhere.
The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Make one edit you can predict
Remove sms, then try fax. Compare the returned flag and channel list so an already-disabled option does not look like an unexpected failure.
Remove email and expect sms and push with removed true. Remove fax and expect all three original channels with removed false. Finally start with an empty channels array: deleting sms still returns false. Each case checks the operation itself without confusing it with a server request or notification delivery. For an undo action, keep the removed value yourself before deletion. The boolean can confirm removal, but it cannot reconstruct the old collection or its display order.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.
When discussing notification controls, it helps to show both a removed channel and an already-absent one. Put those sample settings in the HTML and share the example through NOS, so your teammate can check the remaining selection and feedback flag together. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.
