String.endsWith in JavaScript: html filename check

Build html filename check with String.endsWith. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Before opening a workshop file in your prototype, you want a quick hint that its name ends in .html. String.endsWith() expresses that preliminary filename check.

The sample workshop.html returns true. This is a useful label for a file picker, but the filename alone cannot tell you what the file actually contains.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.endsWith with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.endsWith('.html') compares the end of the string with those exact characters. The dot is part of the suffix, and the check is case-sensitive.

workshop.HTML therefore returns false with this expression. If your naming rule permits uppercase extensions, compare a lowercase version of the name instead of assuming endsWith ignores case.

The method returns a boolean and leaves the filename unchanged. An optional endPosition argument lets you treat an earlier position as the end of the string, though the default full-length check is the appropriate starting point here.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "workshop.html";
const result = data.endsWith('.html');
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

true

Choose Copy code below to get the full HTML file, including its script and styles. Save it as index.html and open it in a browser. The editable input uses JSON; a string needs surrounding double quotes, while an array needs square brackets.

A complete HTML starter for String.endsWith; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

A file named workshop.html might contain unexpected content, and a suffix check does not make that content safe. Keep real upload validation and safe rendering separate from this convenience hint.

Trailing spaces also change the result. Decide whether to trim a manually entered filename, but do not silently rewrite a real file's name without understanding your workflow. A URL with a query string is another different input: a full URL may not end in .html even when its path does.

Make the behavior your own

Try workshop.HTML, workshop.html.txt, and an empty string. Only the original lowercase .html suffix should pass the supplied expression.

In the copied starter, compare data.endsWith('.html') with data.toLowerCase().endsWith('.html'). Then add a label such as HTML filename or Check the file type. Avoid a label such as Safe file, because your code has not inspected the file contents. That small wording choice keeps the UI honest.

A second html filename check sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second html filename check sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.endsWith. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

Ask a reviewer to test a few realistic filenames before using the hint in a file picker. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so they can see the exact rule in action. NOS shares the prototype; this lesson's boolean check is not a security check for uploaded HTML.

Questions people ask

What does String.endsWith do in this example?

endsWith checks a literal suffix and returns true for workshop.html.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.endsWith?

A filename extension does not prove content or safety. This case-sensitive check must not replace real upload validation.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
