Array.at in JavaScript: final project milestone

Build final project milestone with Array.at. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A project timeline grows as you add milestones. Its final milestone should remain easy to read without recalculating the last index every time. Array.at(-1) selects it directly.

For Kickoff, Prototype, and Launch, the result is Launch. Negative indexes express a position measured backward from the end, while the original timeline stays in order.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.at with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.at(-1) means the last entry. at(-2) means the entry immediately before it, which is Prototype in this sample. Positive indexes work from the start, so at(0) returns Kickoff.

The operation returns one value rather than a new array or a count. That makes it a natural input for a final-milestone label. Adding another milestone to the source changes which value at(-1) selects without changing the expression.

Ordinary bracket notation behaves differently: data[-1] looks for a property named -1. It does not count backward through array entries. That is why a negative number works with at but generally does not retrieve the last entry inside brackets.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Kickoff",
  "Prototype",
  "Launch"
];
const result = data.at(-1);
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"Launch"
The starter shows the Array.at operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.at; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

If the requested position is outside the array, at returns undefined. The same happens with at(-1) on an empty timeline. Use an explicit fallback when a milestone label must always have readable text.

For example, data.at(-1) ?? 'No milestones yet' covers a missing result. The nullish fallback preserves values such as an empty string; if blank titles should also trigger a fallback, that is an additional validation rule to implement separately.

Make the behavior your own

Add Sign-off after Launch and choose Update preview. Sign-off should become the final milestone immediately. Then test [] and observe the missing-value result.

In the copied starter, display both at(-1) and at(-2) as final and previous milestones. A one-item timeline has a final entry but no previous one, so give those labels separate fallback states. That makes the component work during project setup as well as near completion.

A second final project milestone sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second final project milestone sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.at. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A timeline review should cover zero, one, and several milestones. Once its final and previous labels make sense in each case, share the complete HTML with HTML to link. A reviewer can test the same selection logic without setting up your local file; their edits are not automatically shared with other visitors.

Questions people ask

What does Array.at do in this example?

at(-1) returns Launch. Negative indexes count backward from the end.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.at?

Out-of-range positions return undefined. Bracket notation data[-1] does not read the last array entry.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
