Array.values in JavaScript: roster iterator consumption

Build roster iterator consumption with Array.values. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

You need to process Mina, Sam, and Jo one at a time rather than inspect their indexes. Array.values() supplies an iterator over the guests in order.

The finished demo collects that iterator back into a list. The names look unchanged, but the operation introduces a different tool: a sequence that advances as you consume it.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.values with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.values() creates an iterator whose first value is Mina, followed by Sam and Jo. Array.from consumes the iterator completely and constructs the displayed array of those three names.

The source array is not emptied by this process. What becomes exhausted is the iterator, not the roster. Create another iterator with data.values() whenever you want a fresh pass through the source.

Arrays use their values iterator by default, so a for...of loop over data also visits the names. Calling values explicitly is helpful when demonstrating next() or passing an iterator to another operation that consumes it.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Mina",
  "Sam",
  "Jo"
];
const result = Array.from(data.values());
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

[
  "Mina",
  "Sam",
  "Jo"
]
The starter shows the Array.values operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.values; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

Store one iterator, call next once, then collect its remaining values. Mina has already been consumed, so the collected remainder is Sam and Jo. Collecting the same exhausted iterator again gives an empty array.

That behavior is easy to miss when an iterator's contents resemble an ordinary list. Do not assume it can be replayed like an array. The preview starts from fresh input and creates a fresh iterator on each run; repeated preview runs therefore do not demonstrate exhaustion.

Make the behavior your own

In the copied starter, create a variable named iterator from data.values(). Call iterator.next() once and inspect its value and done fields. Then pass that same iterator to Array.from.

Predict the remaining names before running the code, and collect it a second time to confirm exhaustion. Finally, try an empty source: its first next call should indicate that the sequence is already done. This exercise shows where iterator state actually lives.

A second roster iterator consumption sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second roster iterator consumption sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.values. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

Iterator behavior is clearer in a running example than in a still image of the roster. Copy the complete HTML and share it through HTML to link so someone can inspect the first step and the remainder. Each visitor runs the demonstration locally; the guests are fictional sample data.

Questions people ask

What does Array.values do in this example?

values yields each array value in sequence. Array.from consumes that iterator into a new array.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.values?

Iterators are consumed as they advance. An exhausted iterator does not produce the same list again.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
