Array.keys in JavaScript: zero-based position ruler

Build zero-based position ruler with Array.keys. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A three-stage workflow reads Draft, Review, and Publish to a person, but JavaScript addresses those positions as 0, 1, and 2. Array.keys() exposes that index sequence directly.

This lesson builds a zero-based position ruler. It is useful when you want to see exactly which indexes exist before using them to select or label workflow entries.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.keys with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

Calling data.keys() creates an iterator over the indexes of the array. It yields positions rather than the strings stored at those positions.

Array.from consumes the iterator and produces the visible array [0, 1, 2]. The source still contains Draft, Review, and Publish; the method neither replaces the titles with numbers nor changes their order.

The highest valid index in this three-element array is 2, because indexes start at zero. Adding a fourth element gives the new item index 3. Keep that difference between length and final index clear when you select an entry.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Draft",
  "Review",
  "Publish"
];
const result = Array.from(data.keys());
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

[
  0,
  1,
  2
]
The starter shows the Array.keys operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.keys; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

keys does not give you object property names or the workflow titles. Use values for the titles, or entries when you need each title together with its position.

For a sparse array, keys still yields every index up to length minus one, even for a hole. The demo accepts JSON arrays, which cannot express a missing array slot directly, so the supplied data is dense. Do not infer that a returned index always proves a populated value exists in every possible JavaScript array.

Make the behavior your own

Add a fourth stage to the editor, choose Update preview, and check that the ruler becomes [0, 1, 2, 3]. Removing the first stage produces three positions again; it does not preserve the old numbers as IDs.

In the copied starter, turn each index into a label with index + 1 while keeping the underlying index for lookup. Try [] as well. An empty workflow should produce an empty ruler rather than a misleading Step 1.

A second zero-based position ruler sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second zero-based position ruler sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.keys. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A position ruler can help someone review a selector or stepper that has an off-by-one problem. Share the complete HTML with HTML to link, then ask them to compare the displayed labels with the zero-based indexes. This is a shared demonstration, not stored workflow data.

Questions people ask

What does Array.keys do in this example?

keys produces an iterator over indexes. Array.from converts those indexes into an array.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.keys?

Storage indexes begin at zero, while display numbering often begins at one.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
