Array.entries in JavaScript: numbered presentation outline

Build numbered presentation outline with Array.entries. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A presentation outline stores Problem, Prototype, and Next steps as plain titles. On screen, readers expect Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3. Array.entries() gives you each title together with its zero-based position.

The example turns those pairs into numbered step objects. You can then build a numbered outline without maintaining a second list of manually assigned numbers.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.entries with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.entries() returns an iterator that yields pairs such as [0, 'Problem']. The first part is the array index, and the second part is the value at that index.

Array.from consumes those pairs and uses a callback to produce the display objects. Destructuring names the pair's pieces index and title; adding one to index gives human-facing steps 1 through 3.

Neither entries nor this conversion rearranges the source titles. The new array contains objects such as {step: 1, title: 'Problem'}, which is a convenient shape for rendering a title and a badge together. The numbering reflects current positions, not permanent identities.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Problem",
  "Prototype",
  "Next steps"
];
const result = Array.from(data.entries(), ([index, title]) => ({step: index + 1, title}));
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

[
  {
    "step": 1,
    "title": "Problem"
  },
  {
    "step": 2,
    "title": "Prototype"
  },
  {
    "step": 3,
    "title": "Next steps"
  }
]
The starter shows the Array.entries operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.entries; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

The iterator itself is not an array of pairs. Calling entries and expecting to immediately use map on the result will fail; consume it with Array.from, spread syntax, or a for...of loop.

Position numbers also change when titles are reordered or removed. That is desirable for a presentation sequence, but unsuitable as a permanent record ID. Give records separate stable IDs if other parts of your application need to keep referring to the same item after a reorder.

Make the behavior your own

Remove Problem from the input JSON and choose Update preview. Prototype should now have step 1, and Next steps should have step 2. The numbering follows the shortened array.

In the copied HTML, add a new opening title and verify that every later display number shifts once. Then use an empty array and decide how the outline should communicate that no sections have been added. These are real outline states, not unusual exceptions.

A second numbered presentation outline sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second numbered presentation outline sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.entries. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A numbered outline is ready for feedback when reordering its titles still produces sensible labels. Copy the complete HTML and share it through HTML to link so a reviewer can try another sequence. The page shares this working example, not a synchronized presentation editor with saved edits.

Questions people ask

What does Array.entries do in this example?

entries returns an iterator of index-value pairs. Array.from consumes it into readable step objects.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.entries?

The result of entries is an iterator, not an array. Consume it before using array-only methods.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
