Array.copyWithin in JavaScript: copy a schedule block

Build copy a schedule block with Array.copyWithin. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A schedule contains A, B, C, D, and E. You want its first two labels repeated in the final two positions, while keeping five positions overall. Array.copyWithin() performs that overwrite inside the existing array.

The completed result is A, B, C, A, B. This is a fixed-length rearrangement: D and E are replaced rather than pushed later in the schedule.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.copyWithin with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

The arguments in data.copyWithin(3, 0, 2) describe destination, source start, and source end. Copying begins at destination index 3. The selected source includes indexes 0 and 1, because end index 2 is exclusive.

The method changes data in place and returns that same array. It never expands the array to make room for extra items; values that would land beyond the existing length are not added.

The source and destination ranges may overlap. copyWithin handles that overlap without progressively copying newly overwritten values as if you had written a careless forward loop. You can test this behavior by changing the destination to 1 in the copied starter.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "A",
  "B",
  "C",
  "D",
  "E"
];
const result = data.copyWithin(3, 0, 2);
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

[
  "A",
  "B",
  "C",
  "A",
  "B"
]
The starter shows the Array.copyWithin operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.copyWithin; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

Do not use copyWithin when the intention is to insert an additional schedule block. Its target positions are overwritten. splice can insert entries, while slice can extract a separate portion for another view.

The copy is shallow. If a schedule entry is an object, copying it into another position copies its reference, not an independent nested record. This sample uses short strings so you can focus on position changes before introducing that extra issue.

Make the behavior your own

First mark the target positions on paper: indexes 3 and 4 are where the copied labels will land. After running the demo, compare all five entries and check that the source length remains five.

Then edit the copied starter to use data.copyWithin(1, 0, 2). Expect A, A, B, D, E. Try a destination of 4 too: only one available slot remains, so only A can fit. These comparisons make the range boundaries concrete.

A second copy a schedule block sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second copy a schedule block sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.copyWithin. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

Before adopting this operation in a schedule editor, have someone check which entries are intentionally overwritten. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so they can try the ranges themselves. NOS makes the browser example accessible; it does not turn these labels into a collaborative scheduling backend.

Questions people ask

What does Array.copyWithin do in this example?

copyWithin copies indexes 0 and 1 into positions starting at 3. The source becomes A, B, C, A, B.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.copyWithin?

It overwrites destination values in place. It does not insert slots or deep-copy objects.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
