A preference panel needs to know whether Design is selected. A membership check directly answers that question.
The selected workshops are Writing, Design, and Coding. A preference panel needs to know whether Design belongs to that list. We will produce true for that selection without finding an index or rebuilding the list.

Try the working result
The original result is true. Remove Design from the input and update the preview; it becomes false. Add a value such as Product Design instead: that is a different complete string, so it does not satisfy the exact membership test.
Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Follow the code
includes returns a boolean indicating whether the value occurs in the array.
data.includes("Design") compares the searched value with the array entries and returns a boolean. It does not search substrings inside each entry. For this string list, matching is case-sensitive, so design and Design are different selections.
const data = [
"Writing",
"Design",
"Coding"
];
const result = data.includes('Design');
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
true
The result answers one membership question. The source still contains the selected workshop list, which the page can use to render all the selected options.

Take the small version apart
The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

Avoid the common mistake
For objects it compares identity, not matching fields. Separate objects with identical names are different values.
For objects, includes compares the actual object identity rather than matching fields. A freshly constructed {name: "Design"} is not the same object as another with the same name. Use some(item => item.name === "Design") when that field-based rule is your intended comparison.
Change one rule, then check it
Try an unselected workshop and render a helpful unchecked state.
An empty selection returns false. Try ["design"] and ["Design"] to confirm the casing rule. includes can find NaN, unlike indexOf; most workshop interfaces will use stable string IDs instead. Normalize identifiers deliberately if your input comes from differently cased sources.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.
Put the example in someone else's hands
A selection rule should line up with the words people see on screen. Share this small preference check and let a reviewer try the exact label, a similar label, and an empty selection before you attach the logic to a larger form.
Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.
