Array.indexOf in JavaScript: seat position lookup

Build seat position lookup with Array.indexOf. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A seat picker needs the position of B1 so it can focus that entry. Membership alone does not provide the position.

The seat list is A1, A2, B1, B2. Selecting B1 requires index 2 so the interface can address the third entry. We will locate that position and distinguish it from the missing result -1.

Seat position lookup: the original sample and its calculated result.
Seat position lookup: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The original result is 2. Move B1 to the first position and update the preview; it becomes 0. Add another B1 at the end: the result still identifies the first occurrence. This is a position lookup, not a list of all matching seats.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try seat position lookup and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

indexOf returns the first matching zero-based index. B1 is at index 2.

indexOf compares entries with the searched value using strict equality. It returns the first matching zero-based position, or -1. For a string seat list that directly answers where a label appears; use findIndex for a condition involving a property inside an object.

const data = [
  "A1",
  "A2",
  "B1",
  "B2"
];
const result = data.indexOf('B1');
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

2

B1 is the third displayed seat but index 2 in JavaScript. Convert between those conventions only when presenting a position to a person; keep the true index when addressing the array.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array indexOf example.

Avoid the common mistake

Missing values return -1. indexOf does not find NaN; includes can test NaN membership.

Check index !== -1 rather than treating the number as a boolean. Zero is a valid position, while -1 means no match. indexOf does not find NaN, and separate objects with matching fields are not equal under its comparison. includes is more direct when you only need membership.

Change one rule, then check it

Add another B1 and verify which occurrence is found.

An empty array returns -1. Try B9 as the searched label in Edit code and show a missing-seat state. Add a duplicate B1, then try the optional starting index to search beyond the first match. A real seat list should define whether duplicates are allowed.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A seat lookup is easy to verify with a first seat, a later seat, and an absent label. Share the example so someone can test those three paths before the returned position is used to focus or update a seat in a larger interface.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.indexOf do in this example?

indexOf returns the first matching zero-based index. B1 is at index 2.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.indexOf?

Missing values return -1. indexOf does not find NaN; includes can test NaN membership.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
