Array.join in JavaScript: compact job-card tags

Build compact job-card tags with Array.join. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A job card needs readable tags in one compact line. Using a single separator keeps that display consistent.

The job card has three tags: Remote, Contract, and Design. Its compact label should read Remote · Contract · Design. We will join the values with a consistent separator while keeping the array available for other parts of the card.

Compact job-card tags: the original sample and its calculated result.
Compact job-card tags: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result is one string, while the source remains a three-entry array. Add a fourth tag and update the preview; another separator appears between the new pair of adjacent entries. There is no extra separator before the first or after the last tag.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try compact job-card tags and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

join returns a string with the chosen separator placed between entries.

join(" · ") converts the entries to text and places that separator between them. The spaces around the middle dot are part of the chosen separator. Omitting the argument uses a comma instead; passing an empty string concatenates the entries with no visible boundary.

const data = [
  "Remote",
  "Contract",
  "Design"
];
const result = data.join(' · ');
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

"Remote · Contract · Design"

The output is a display label rather than an array of clickable controls. Keep the source array when the interface also needs individual tag chips or selection behavior.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array join example.

Avoid the common mistake

It does not escape HTML. Render user-supplied tags with textContent rather than innerHTML.

join does not escape HTML. Place a user-supplied result into textContent rather than interpreting it through innerHTML. Null and undefined entries become empty strings during joining, so a missing tag can create an awkward extra boundary unless you validate or filter the source first.

Change one rule, then check it

Try an empty array and choose a useful fallback label.

An empty array returns an empty string, and a single tag has no separator. Try both cases and choose a fallback such as No tags for the empty one. If tags may contain the separator themselves, do not use this display string as a reliable format for reconstructing the array later.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A compact tag line should be readable with one label, several labels, and none. Share this working formatter and let a reviewer try those cases before you settle the separator and empty-state wording for the finished job card.

Questions people ask

What does Array.join do in this example?

join returns a string with the chosen separator placed between entries.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.join?

It does not escape HTML. Render user-supplied tags with textContent rather than innerHTML.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
