A guest joins a waitlist after Mina and Sam. The interface needs to show Jo at the bottom and update its count to three. Array.push() handles that small change, but its return value often catches beginners out.
The demo makes both outcomes visible: the updated roster is the source array; the returned value is its new length. That distinction matters when you connect a button to a guest list.

Try the working result
Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Follow the operation
Start with two names in data. Calling data.push('Jo') adds one new element after Sam. It changes that same array, so any code holding the array can read the additional guest afterward.
The expression evaluates to 3. Assigning it to result does not create a three-person array; result is simply the number three. Render data when you need the names, and use result when you need the updated count.
You can pass several names in one call. data.push('Jo', 'Lee') appends Jo first and Lee second, preserving the supplied order. It returns 4 for the original two-person roster.
Here is the exact expression behind the original result:
const data = [
"Mina",
"Sam"
];
const result = data.push('Jo');
console.log(result);
Its returned value is:
3

Choose Copy code below to get the full HTML file, including its script and styles. Save it as index.html and open it in a browser. The editable input uses JSON; a string needs surrounding double quotes, while an array needs square brackets.

Handle the important boundary
Do not write data = data.push('Jo'). That replaces your array variable with a number, and the next attempt to list guests will fail. A clearer event handler changes the roster, then reads data.length for its badge.
An empty array is a valid starting point. Pushing Jo into it creates a one-person list and returns 1. The method does not check duplicates: pushing Mina again adds another Mina, so a unique-guest rule belongs in your own application logic.
Make the behavior your own
Use Changed data to compare another starting roster. Next, put an empty array in the editor and choose Update preview: the returned count should be one, with Jo in the source panel.
In the copied starter, append Jo and Lee together. Before running it, write down the expected source order and count. Finally, add a duplicate name and decide whether your waitlist should allow it. This exercise separates adding an item from validating who may join.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.push. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.
Share a version worth testing
A colleague reviewing a waitlist needs to see both the new guest and the count change. Once those agree, copy the complete HTML demo and share it through HTML to link. They can try the same sample without recreating your file. This is a browser-side demonstration, not a shared guest database.
