Array.pop in JavaScript: remove the final planned action

Build remove the final planned action with Array.pop. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

You have planned Draft, Review, and Publish, then decide publishing should wait. Array.pop() removes the final planned action without needing to know its index.

In this lesson, the removed action and the remaining plan are separate results. The finished demo shows Publish as the returned value and Draft plus Review as the source left behind.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.pop with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

The array lists actions in order. data.pop() reads its last element, removes that slot, and returns the removed value. With the supplied plan, result is the string Publish, while data.length falls from three to two.

That is useful for a stack: the last item added is the first item taken off. It is different from serving the oldest task, which needs shift() at the beginning of the array.

Calling pop again on the modified plan would remove Review. The preview resets its source for each run, however, so pressing Update preview repeatedly with identical JSON demonstrates one removal each time rather than gradually emptying a persistent plan.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Draft",
  "Review",
  "Publish"
];
const result = data.pop();
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"Publish"
The starter shows the Array.pop operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.pop; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

An empty array has no final action. pop() returns undefined and leaves its length at zero. The demo prints an explicit representation of that result; it is not a new task named undefined.

If actions are objects, check the removed value before accessing a field such as removed.title. A guard lets the interface say there is nothing left to remove instead of throwing an exception. Keep the removed value if you want to offer undo; pop itself does not remember it for you.

Make the behavior your own

Replace the input with ["Draft"] and predict both panels: Draft should be returned and the source should become empty. Then use [] to observe the no-action case.

In the copied HTML starter, retain the removed value in a variable and push it back only when it exists. That restores the final item and introduces a simple undo flow. Try an empty plan too, because an undo control should not invent an action when there was nothing to remove.

A second remove the final planned action sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second remove the final planned action sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.pop. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

The useful review question is whether removing the final action leaves a sensible plan, including the empty state. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can test those cases directly. NOS provides a way to open the prototype; it does not make each visitor's task list synchronize automatically.

Questions people ask

What does Array.pop do in this example?

pop removes and returns Publish, shortening the source array.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.pop?

An empty array returns undefined. Handle that before reading a removed item's fields.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
