Array.shift in JavaScript: serve the oldest support ticket

Build serve the oldest support ticket with Array.shift. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A support queue contains Ticket 41, Ticket 42, and Ticket 43. Serving the oldest request means taking the item at the beginning, not whichever ticket happens to be last.

Array.shift() returns Ticket 41 and leaves Ticket 42 at the front. The working example shows the ticket being served alongside the remaining queue, so the queue behavior is easy to check.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.shift with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

The order of data represents arrival order. Calling shift removes index zero and returns its previous value. The other elements move down: Ticket 42 becomes index zero and Ticket 43 becomes index one.

The returned string is the ticket being served; it is not the remaining queue. After this call, render data for the waiting list and result for a now-serving label.

For a small browser prototype, this is a clear first-in, first-out model: add new requests at the end with push, then serve them from the front with shift. The two operations express different ends of the same queue.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Ticket 41",
  "Ticket 42",
  "Ticket 43"
];
const result = data.shift();
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"Ticket 41"
The starter shows the Array.shift operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for Array.shift; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

When the queue is empty, shift returns undefined. Check that before displaying a ticket number or reading fields from a ticket object. The interface can then show No requests waiting instead of a broken now-serving label.

Removing from the front also requires array positions to change. If your real workload repeatedly serves very large queues, consider keeping a head index rather than continually shifting every element. This tutorial models the ordering rule; it does not implement a production support system.

Make the behavior your own

Try a one-ticket array and inspect both panels after running it. The returned ticket should still be useful even though the waiting queue has become empty. Then try [] and decide how those two situations should appear differently.

In the copied starter, enqueue Ticket 44 with push before serving one ticket. Predict which ticket will be served: the new arrival should remain at the end. Repeat that reasoning with two initial tickets to check the first-in, first-out rule.

A second serve the oldest support ticket sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second serve the oldest support ticket sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.shift. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

Before connecting a queue to real requests, let another person test its ordering with fictional tickets. Copy the working HTML and share it through HTML to link. They can inspect the interaction in their browser, while the prototype remains a local demonstration rather than a live shared ticket service.

Questions people ask

What does Array.shift do in this example?

shift removes and returns Ticket 41. The source now begins with Ticket 42.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.shift?

Repeated shifting of large arrays can be costly because positions move. Consider an index-based queue at scale.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
