Array.unshift in JavaScript: urgent ticket insertion

Build urgent ticket insertion with Array.unshift. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An urgent request arrives while Normal ticket and Follow-up are already waiting. Appending it would put it behind both. Array.unshift() puts the new request at the beginning instead.

The resulting queue begins with Urgent ticket, and the method returns 3. The preview displays the queue and the count separately, which helps avoid confusing the new length with the queue itself.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try Array.unshift with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.unshift('Urgent ticket') inserts one element before index zero. The existing entries move one position to the right, and the source array grows from two elements to three.

The returned number can update a queue badge. To show the actual requests, read data after the call; assigning the return value to a list variable would give you a number where an array is expected.

Supplying two values together keeps their argument order. data.unshift('Urgent A', 'Urgent B') creates Urgent A, Urgent B, Normal ticket, Follow-up. Separate calls produce a different effect: inserting A and then B puts B ahead of A.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = [
  "Normal ticket",
  "Follow-up"
];
const result = data.unshift('Urgent ticket');
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

3

A complete HTML starter for Array.unshift; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

Prepending is an ordering operation, not a priority system. Each later urgent request can jump ahead of an earlier one if you keep unshifting individually. Decide whether that is the intended behavior before connecting the method to a real intake button.

An empty source works normally: inserting one urgent ticket creates a one-item queue and returns 1. Calling unshift with no arguments adds nothing and returns the existing length. It does not reserve a blank ticket slot.

Make the behavior your own

Use Changed data to inspect a different existing queue. Then test [] and check that the urgent request becomes the only item.

In the copied starter, compare a single call containing Urgent A and Urgent B with two separate calls. Write down both expected orders before running the code. That small comparison is more useful than memorizing the method name: it shows exactly how your insertion policy affects who gets served next.

A second urgent ticket insertion sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second urgent ticket insertion sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for Array.unshift. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A queue review should include more than one urgent arrival. Once you can explain their order, share the complete HTML using HTML to link and ask someone to test it. The shared page demonstrates your policy; it does not distribute one synchronized queue across visitors.

Questions people ask

What does Array.unshift do in this example?

unshift inserts at the start and returns the new length. The modified source contains the actual queue.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.unshift?

Its return value is a count. Multiple inserted entries keep their supplied order.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
