Array.map in JavaScript: product price cards

Build product price cards with Array.map. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A product list arrives as plain data, but shoppers need readable price cards. Writing each card by hand works until one price changes.

We will turn three product records into three display records: Notebook at $12.00, Pen at $3.00, and Bag at $28.00. The price formatting happens in one place, so another product needs data rather than another handwritten rule.

Product price cards: the original sample and its calculated result.
Product price cards: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The preview keeps the raw products beside their display-ready result. Change one price and update the preview: its corresponding output changes, while the other products keep their names. This is the useful promise of map here: one input product produces one output record.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try product price cards and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

map visits each item and builds a new array from the callback return values. Here one product becomes one display card; the number of cards stays the same.

The callback receives a product as item. It returns an object with two fields: product reads item.name, while price adds a dollar sign to the two-decimal string. Parentheses around the object make the arrow function return that object directly. Neither the array nor its product fields are edited by this callback.

const data = [
  {
    "name": "Notebook",
    "price": 12
  },
  {
    "name": "Pen",
    "price": 3
  },
  {
    "name": "Bag",
    "price": 28
  }
];
const result = data.map(item => ({product: item.name, price: '$' + item.price.toFixed(2)}));
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  {
    "product": "Notebook",
    "price": "$12.00"
  },
  {
    "product": "Pen",
    "price": "$3.00"
  },
  {
    "product": "Bag",
    "price": "$28.00"
  }
]

Follow Notebook through the two panels: the numeric 12 becomes the display string $12.00. The price is now suited to a label; keep the original numeric price for later arithmetic.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array map example.

Avoid the common mistake

A callback with braces needs an explicit return. Forget it and the new array fills with undefined instead of cards.

Writing item => { product: item.name } does not return the intended object. Use item => ({ product: item.name }) or a block with return. Also choose filter when some products should disappear; returning nothing from map still leaves a position in its result.

Change one rule, then check it

Add a discounted price while keeping the original price for comparison.

An empty catalog produces []. Add a product named Pencil with price 2 and expect four output records. For the discount exercise, calculate item.price * 0.9 before formatting; $10.80 is the expected discounted Notebook price. Keep that separate from the unchanged $12.00 label.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

When the price display is ready, let a teammate try a low price and a newly added product. They can check the formatting more easily in a working preview than in a screenshot. Use fictional products while you agree on the display.

Questions people ask

What does Array.map do in this example?

map visits each item and builds a new array from the callback return values. Here one product becomes one display card; the number of cards stays the same.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.map?

A callback with braces needs an explicit return. Forget it and the new array fills with undefined instead of cards.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
