Array.filter in JavaScript: available product picker

Build available product picker with Array.filter. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A catalog should not offer items that cannot ship. The useful question is which products meet the stock rule, rather than how to hide random cards.

The sample catalog contains Notebook with eight units, Pen with none, and Bag with three. Our picker should offer Notebook and Bag. We will express that decision as a stock rule instead of manually removing the Pen card.

Available product picker: the original sample and its calculated result.
Available product picker: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

Compare the three incoming records with the two returned records. Change Pen stock from 0 to 2, then update the preview: Pen joins the available list. Changing its name alone should not affect availability, because the callback tests stock.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try available product picker and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

filter keeps an item only when its callback returns a truthy value. Stock above zero keeps Notebook and Bag; Pen drops out.

For each product, item.stock > 0 evaluates to true or false. filter keeps the product when the comparison is true and preserves the order of those survivors. It does not transform a product into a new display shape; use map afterward if the interface also needs formatted labels.

const data = [
  {
    "name": "Notebook",
    "stock": 8
  },
  {
    "name": "Pen",
    "stock": 0
  },
  {
    "name": "Bag",
    "stock": 3
  }
];
const result = data.filter(item => item.stock > 0);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  {
    "name": "Notebook",
    "stock": 8
  },
  {
    "name": "Bag",
    "stock": 3
  }
]

Notebook still has stock 8 in the result. That matters because filtering chooses existing objects rather than rebuilding their fields. The source catalog still contains Pen.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array filter example.

Avoid the common mistake

filter returns a new array containing references to the original product objects, rather than deep copies.

The result array is new, but its product objects are shared with the source. Changing result[0].stock also changes that same Notebook object in the original catalog. Create new objects when you need an independently editable draft, rather than treating filter as a deep-copy operation.

Change one rule, then check it

Change the stock rule to at least five items and predict which card remains.

An empty input or a catalog where every stock value is zero returns []. A real picker should show No products available rather than a blank region. With the stricter item.stock >= 5 rule, only Notebook survives; verify that before adding more conditions.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A stock rule is a small decision with a visible consequence. Before using it in a larger catalog, ask someone to try zero stock, a low positive stock, and an empty catalog. Share the prototype with sample inventory rather than actual customer orders.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.filter do in this example?

filter keeps an item only when its callback returns a truthy value. Stock above zero keeps Notebook and Bag; Pen drops out.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.filter?

filter returns a new array containing references to the original product objects, rather than deep copies.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
