Array.reduce in JavaScript: shopping cart total

Build shopping cart total with Array.reduce. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

The cart has several lines, but checkout needs one subtotal. A running total is easier to reason about when its starting value is explicit.

Two Notebooks at 12 each and four Pens at 3 each should total 36. The point of this example is to make that calculation visible: each cart line contributes one amount, and the running subtotal begins at zero.

Shopping cart total: the original sample and its calculated result.
Shopping cart total: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The returned value is one number, even though the source contains two objects. Increase Notebook quantity from 2 to 3 and expect 48. If you instead change Pen quantity to zero, only the Notebook line contributes, giving 24.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try shopping cart total and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

reduce passes the accumulated total into each callback. Multiplying price by quantity gives a line total; adding those totals gives 36.

The initial 0 is the first total. For Notebook, price * quantity is 24, so the callback returns 24. For Pen, the incoming total is now 24 and the line contributes 12. Returning 36 finishes the calculation. The callback return becomes the next total; it must happen on every step.

const data = [
  {
    "name": "Notebook",
    "price": 12,
    "quantity": 2
  },
  {
    "name": "Pen",
    "price": 3,
    "quantity": 4
  }
];
const result = data.reduce((total, item) => total + item.price * item.quantity, 0);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

36

The source panel still contains both cart lines and their quantities. reduce is calculating the subtotal here, not deleting items or turning their stored prices into display strings.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array reduce example.

Avoid the common mistake

Without initial zero, the first object becomes the accumulator. An empty array also throws without an initial value.

Without the initial zero, reduce starts with the first cart object rather than a numeric subtotal. That is the wrong accumulator for this calculation. An empty array without an initial value also throws. Keeping the initial value explicit makes both the ordinary and empty-cart cases predictable.

Change one rule, then check it

Add another cart line, then empty the cart and check that its subtotal becomes zero.

Run the empty-array case: the subtotal should be 0. Then add a Bag costing 28 with quantity 1 and expect 64. These sample amounts are simple whole units; a real checkout also needs its own currency precision, tax, and discount rules.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A cart total is easy to agree on when reviewers can change quantities themselves. Send the small working calculation for review before connecting it to payment or inventory systems. This example teaches the subtotal logic, without processing any purchases.

Questions people ask

What does Array.reduce do in this example?

reduce passes the accumulated total into each callback. Multiplying price by quantity gives a line total; adding those totals gives 36.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.reduce?

Without initial zero, the first object becomes the accumulator. An empty array also throws without an initial value.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
