Array.sort in JavaScript: numeric price sorting

Build numeric price sorting with Array.sort. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A price list can look sorted while putting 100 before 12. The default string comparison is why numeric lists need an explicit comparator.

The four prices arrive as 28, 3, 12, and 100. A cheapest-first view should read 3, 12, 28, 100. We will add a numeric comparison and inspect the original array, because sorting changes more than the returned display.

Numeric price sorting: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result and source both become ascending lists. This is intentional: sort rearranges the input array itself. The visible result is therefore not an independent sorted draft. Watch both panels when changing the ordering rule.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try numeric price sorting and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

sort edits the source array. The a - b comparator produces 3, 12, 28, 100.

The comparator a - b returns a negative number when a is smaller, a positive number when a is larger, and zero for equal values. Those signs tell sort the desired ordering. Without that callback, these numbers are compared as strings, giving 100, 12, 28, 3.

const data = [
  28,
  3,
  12,
  100
];
const result = data.sort((a, b) => a - b);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  3,
  12,
  28,
  100
]

The changed source explains why a second interface using the same array might suddenly rearrange its items. A correct numeric result does not imply the original order was preserved.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array sort example.

Avoid the common mistake

Without a comparator, sort compares string representations. Copy the array first if another view needs its original order.

Use data.toSorted((a, b) => a - b) when another view needs the unsorted sequence, or copy the array before calling sort. Keep the comparator consistent; a callback that returns only true or false does not provide the negative, positive, and zero outcomes sorting expects.

Change one rule, then check it

Use b - a and inspect both the result and source.

An empty array stays empty. Change the comparator to b - a and predict 100, 28, 12, 3. Then add a second 12. Equal numeric values should remain adjacent; sorting does not remove duplicates.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

If this ordering will become a catalog control, have someone compare cheapest-first and most-expensive-first using the same sample. A runnable example exposes the ordering rule and its mutation behavior more clearly than a finished list alone.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.sort do in this example?

sort edits the source array. The a - b comparator produces 3, 12, 28, 100.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.sort?

Without a comparator, sort compares string representations. Copy the array first if another view needs its original order.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
