A receptionist has a booking reference and needs one reservation. Showing the entire roster would make a simple lookup harder to use.
The receptionist is looking for booking BK-105, which belongs to Sam. We will return that one reservation from the list. The example also makes the missing-booking case visible, because a lookup must handle a reference that is not present.

Try the working result
The result is Sam’s booking object, not a one-item array. Change BK-105 in the sample to another reference and update the preview: the fixed lookup no longer finds it. The source list remains intact throughout the search.
Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Follow the code
find returns the first element whose callback passes. BK-105 selects Sam, and the result is an object rather than an array.
The callback compares each item.reference with "BK-105" using strict equality. find stops on the first matching element and returns that element. Use filter instead when you need all matches, or findIndex when you need the position rather than the booking itself.
const data = [
{
"reference": "BK-104",
"guest": "Mina"
},
{
"reference": "BK-105",
"guest": "Sam"
}
];
const result = data.find(item => item.reference === 'BK-105');
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
{
"reference": "BK-105",
"guest": "Sam"
}
The returned object includes both reference and guest because find selects the existing element. It does not turn that object into a summary or copy its fields into a new record.

Take the small version apart
The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

Avoid the common mistake
No match returns undefined. Handle that state before reading fields from the result.
With no match, the return is undefined. Reading result.guest immediately would then throw. Check result before rendering the guest, or use a clear fallback. Because a match is the original object reference, editing its guest property also edits that object in the source list.
Change one rule, then check it
Try BK-999 and add a clear missing-booking message.
An empty roster returns undefined too. Try BK-999 as the search target in Edit code and show Booking not found. Add a second BK-105 record: find returns the first, which is why duplicate references need their own data-quality rule rather than a different presentation.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.
Put the example in someone else's hands
A lookup is only finished when both the successful and missing paths are understandable. Share the fictional booking preview so someone can test a known reference and an absent one. They can review that behavior without seeing a real guest roster.
Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.
