Array.of in JavaScript: a single numbered task

Build a single numbered task with Array.of. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A queue contains one task whose label is the number four. The numeric array constructor can accidentally create four empty slots instead.

The queue has one task whose numeric label is 4. We want [4], an array with one stored value. Array.of makes that intent explicit and avoids the single-number behavior of the Array constructor, which would allocate four empty slots.

A single numbered task: the original sample and its calculated result.
A single numbered task: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result is [4], with a length of one. Change the input to 8 and update the preview; the result becomes [8], still one item. The number is the stored task value rather than an instruction to create eight positions.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try a single numbered task and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

Array.of puts its arguments into an array. Passing 4 gives [4], one numeric item.

Array.of places each argument into a new array. This example passes one argument, data. Array.of(4, 5) would contain two numeric entries. Array(4), by contrast, creates a sparse array of length four without storing a numeric 4 in any slot.

const data = 4;
const result = Array.of(data);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  4
]

Inspect the brackets around 4. They represent a real entry, which normal iteration can visit. Four empty slots are a different data structure, despite also having an array length.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array of example.

Avoid the common mistake

Array(4) sets a length; Array.of(4) stores a value. They are different operations.

The numeric constructor difference applies to a single numeric argument. Do not use Array(4) as a shortcut for [4]. Also note that Array.of(existingArray) wraps that array as one nested item; it does not copy or unpack its entries the way Array.from or spread would.

Change one rule, then check it

Compare their lengths and actual stored entries.

With the current expression, input 0 returns [0]; it does not return an empty array. To create an empty array with this factory, call Array.of() with no arguments. Compare Array.of(4).length and Array(4).length in Edit code and expect 1 versus 4.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Wrapping a value should not silently change its meaning. Share this small queue example when reviewing code that accepts numeric values, so a teammate can verify that a number becomes one item rather than an accidental batch of empty positions.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.of do in this example?

Array.of puts its arguments into an array. Passing 4 gives [4], one numeric item.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.of?

Array(4) sets a length; Array.of(4) stores a value. They are different operations.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
