Array.from in JavaScript: numbered event badges

Build numbered event badges with Array.from. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An event needs five placeholder badges before names arrive. A generated sequence is clearer than maintaining five nearly identical objects.

An event needs five placeholder badges before the guest names arrive. We will generate Guest 1 through Guest 5 from the count 5. The exercise shows how a numeric length can define positions while a mapping callback supplies the actual badge records.

Numbered event badges: the original sample and its calculated result.
Numbered event badges: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The returned array contains five objects, each with a badge number and label. Change the input to 3 and update the preview; the list should stop at Guest 3. The source remains the count rather than becoming the generated array.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try numbered event badges and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

Array.from calls the mapping function for each position. Adding one creates badge numbers starting at one.

Array.from receives an array-like object with length: data. The callback runs for each position. Its first argument is unused here, so it is named _. The index starts at zero; index + 1 produces the human-facing badge numbers. The callback creates a fresh object for each badge.

const data = 5;
if (!Number.isInteger(data) || data < 0 || data > 200) {
  throw new RangeError('Use a whole badge count from 0 to 200.');
}
const result = Array.from({length: data}, (_, index) => ({badge: index + 1, label: 'Guest ' + (index + 1)}));
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  {
    "badge": 1,
    "label": "Guest 1"
  },
  {
    "badge": 2,
    "label": "Guest 2"
  },
  {
    "badge": 3,
    "label": "Guest 3"
  },
  {
    "badge": 4,
    "label": "Guest 4"
  },
  {
    "badge": 5,
    "label": "Guest 5"
  }
]

The fifth badge has number 5 because its index is 4. Keeping the index and the displayed number distinct avoids an unwanted Guest 0 label.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array from example.

The runnable demo accepts only whole badge counts from 0 to 200. This is a deliberate prototype limit: a short numeric input can otherwise request a huge array and freeze the page. The code checks the count before allocating any badges.

Avoid the common mistake

Generate each object separately. Validate lengths and set a practical limit before accepting user input.

Validate the count before generating records from user input. Require a reasonable non-negative integer and an upper bound for your interface, rather than letting a huge count allocate an enormous array. Do not replace this callback with fill(oneObject) when each badge needs its own editable object.

Change one rule, then check it

Change the length to three and check the last badge number.

A length of zero returns []. Change the count to 3, verify all three numbers, then customize the label in Edit code while keeping the numbering. If actual guest data is already an array, map is more appropriate than generating anonymous positions from a count.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Placeholder badges are useful for checking a layout before guest data exists. Share the generator so a reviewer can try a short list and an empty one, then agree on the badge spacing and labels using fictional records.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.from do in this example?

Array.from calls the mapping function for each position. Adding one creates badge numbers starting at one.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.from?

Generate each object separately. Validate lengths and set a practical limit before accepting user input.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
