Array.flatMap in JavaScript: order packing board

Build order packing board with Array.flatMap. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Staff pack individual items, even though the source data is grouped into orders. Each packing row still needs its order reference.

Order A1 contains Notebook and Pen; order A2 contains Bag. A packing board needs three item rows, and each must retain its order reference. We will expand the orders into those rows without losing the relationship between an item and its order.

Order packing board: the original sample and its calculated result.
Order packing board: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result has A1/Notebook, A1/Pen, and A2/Bag. The source still contains two orders. Add another item to A1 and update the preview; it creates one more packing row with the same A1 reference.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try order packing board and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

flatMap turns each order into item rows, then flattens one level. Two orders yield three rows.

The outer flatMap visits each order. Its callback uses the inner items.map to create records containing order and item. That callback returns an array of rows for one order; flatMap then combines those arrays into a single result by flattening one level.

const data = [
  {
    "order": "A1",
    "items": [
      "Notebook",
      "Pen"
    ]
  },
  {
    "order": "A2",
    "items": [
      "Bag"
    ]
  }
];
const result = data.flatMap(order => order.items.map(item => ({order: order.order, item})));
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  {
    "order": "A1",
    "item": "Notebook"
  },
  {
    "order": "A1",
    "item": "Pen"
  },
  {
    "order": "A2",
    "item": "Bag"
  }
]

Two orders becoming three rows is intentional. Unlike ordinary map, flatMap can change the result length because one source order may produce several rows or none.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array flatMap example.

Avoid the common mistake

It flattens only one level. More deeply nested arrays remain nested.

Flattening only one level means deeper arrays remain nested. Also ensure every order has an items array: a missing or null items value makes the inner map call fail. Validate imported orders or deliberately supply an empty list when your data policy treats missing items as no items.

Change one rule, then check it

Add an empty order and check that it produces no packing rows.

Add {"order":"A3","items":[]} and expect no extra packing rows. An empty overall source returns []. Then give A3 one item and confirm its new row carries A3, rather than accidentally reusing another order’s reference.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A packing-row format should be checked by someone who needs to distinguish similar items from different orders. Share this fictional board and ask them to add an empty order and another item. That tests the relationship the transformation is supposed to preserve.

Questions people ask

What does Array.flatMap do in this example?

flatMap turns each order into item rows, then flattens one level. Two orders yield three rows.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.flatMap?

It flattens only one level. More deeply nested arrays remain nested.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
