Array.reverse in JavaScript: newest-first activity feed

Build newest-first activity feed with Array.reverse. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An activity feed arrives oldest first, while the dashboard wants the newest event on top. Its events are already ordered, so reversing is enough.

The events already run from Created draft to Approved release. A newest-first feed needs that sequence turned around, not sorted by the event text. We will reverse it and inspect what happens to the original history array.

Newest-first activity feed: the original sample and its calculated result.
Newest-first activity feed: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result begins with Approved release and ends with Created draft. The source panel changes to that same sequence. That is expected: reverse rearranges the array itself and returns the same array, rather than creating a second timeline.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try newest-first activity feed and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

reverse changes the source array and returns that same array in opposite order.

reverse takes no comparator and no arguments. It exchanges positions from opposite ends of the array. It is appropriate only because these events are already in the chronology you want to invert. An unsorted feed still needs a date-based ordering rule before reversal means newest first.

const data = [
  "Created draft",
  "Requested review",
  "Approved release"
];
const result = data.reverse();
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  "Approved release",
  "Requested review",
  "Created draft"
]

The changed source is the important clue. Another component holding this same history will see its order changed too, even if your result panel looks correct.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array reverse example.

Avoid the common mistake

Calling reverse again restores the prior order. Repeated rendering should not accidentally flip shared data.

Calling reverse twice on the same array restores its previous order. Avoid calling it on shared data every time a component renders, or the order can flip repeatedly. Use toReversed, or [...data].reverse(), when you need a separate newest-first view without rearranging the source.

Change one rule, then check it

Run reverse twice and explain the second result.

Empty and single-event arrays keep the same visible order. In Edit code, run data.reverse() twice in one execution and inspect the final source. The lab normally parses fresh input for each preview update, so two separate Update preview clicks are not a double reversal of one array.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.
Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Before using this operation in an activity feed, let someone inspect both the oldest-first input and the newest-first result. Share the working sequence to discuss the desired order, then choose explicitly whether the history should be mutated.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.reverse do in this example?

reverse changes the source array and returns that same array in opposite order.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.reverse?

Calling reverse again restores the prior order. Repeated rendering should not accidentally flip shared data.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
